Mat, when you come back from Wolfville, take Jerry and haul what is packed to the station." Jen was alone with her father, who was preparing to go with Mat with a load of fish. "Jinnie, make a list of things you want in town. Winter is coming on, so put down everything you and the house should have. We must have some new books for the winter's reading." Jen prepared her list, not forgetting her personal needs. The sale of Hill Farm, and the returns from the marketed apples enabled her to indulge her taste for the feminine things she had denied herself during the period of frugality. The fear of disaster and loss was lifted from Red Bank, and there was ample money for all their needs. Dick White was reaping the reward of patience and foresight in financial matters. That Jen rearranged her beautiful hair, and gave attention to her appearance, under these improved circumstances, was not strange. Jen was a woman young and attractive though mature in thought, perhaps, beyond her years. She was a careful manager from the very demands of her daily life. She had a passion for getting things done, and done well. As she was preparing to go to the orchard, Mary Hilton came bustling in, in her usual busy manner.
