Not illustrated. 1869 Excerpt: ...Are we, like the Apostle, troubled often and sorely perplexed under a sense of our own infirmities, it were wise in us to be like-minded with him in his faith, and take him for our pattern. Doubtless all have their sorrows, and all desire comfort. At some or other period of his life every human being has probably some sorrow, at which the world would never guess; some disappointment, perhaps, of which in the retrospect even he himself is ashamed to feel the weight and the pain. A still small voice then whispers to him, " Cast thy burden upon the Lord: He will sustain thee," the counsel falling on the heart gently as "rain into a fleece 1 2 Cor. xii. 9. Bom. viii. 26. of wool."1 Let every troubled soul, then--thine, O reader, if thou art under affliction--seek the relief needed, where none ever seek in vain; and pray that the Spirit of Comfort may be with him in his trouble, as He was with the afflicted Apostle. Well does that Apostle counsel us that whilst we pray "always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit," we "watch thereunto with all perseverance"2--with that watchfulness over self, the necessity of which none ever felt more keenly than St. Paul, whose ardent and impetuous nature required the correcting influence of the gentle Spirit of the Gospel of peace. On the other hand, so surely did he enjoy the rich consolations of that influence, that neither bonds, nor imprisonment, nor any such thing, could subdue his courage, or destroy his peace and hope. It seemed as if the Apostle, when under the influence of this Holy Spirit of God, could so lift his soul above the tyranny of outward circumstances, as to triumph over the world.
