Just about every resident in the tiny Dartmoor village of Highfield wants to lay their hands on a piece of Windward House in John Trevena's 1916 novel "A Drake by George " The book is an amusing tale about harmless and criminal frauds committed by the quirky characters that live in a remote parish on the English moors. Captain William Drake, the current owner of Windward House, is a retired sailor who claims to be a descendant of Sir Francis Drake. Like his famous ancestor, the Captain is larger than life. He has filled the premises with real and fictional artifacts from his naval adventures and is the local celebrity. The Captain basks in the limelight with his devoted wife, Maria, and his 30-year-old nephew, George, a lazy bachelor with no job prospects. George's secure lifestyle becomes complicated when the Captain dies and Miss Sophy Yard, the senile sister of Maria Drake, moves in along with her attractive young lady-servant, Nellie Blisland. A tomato merchant named Percy Travener, who is a nephew of Miss Yard, visits the family and stirs up trouble. Soon everyone in the house, including the servants, have competing schemes for the Captain's treasured possessions. Even the neighbors and an American businessman enter the fray. This edition of the novel includes detailed notes about the many historical, literary and Biblical references used by the author.
