Excerpt: ... SERMON IV. TWO CHRISTIAN SACRAMENTS.--ERRONEOUS ADDITIONS OF ROME, &c. 1 Cor. xii. 13. "By one Spirit we are all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit." Having dwelt upon the Holy Scriptures as our comfort and our joy--upon Christ's Holy Catholic Church, to which we are privileged to belong--and upon the one Mediatorship of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, as opposed to Mariolatry, or worship of the Virgin, to the Invocation of Saints, and other like errors devised by the naughtiness of man's heart--we come next to consider those Sacraments which Christ has ordained in His Church as generally necessary to salvation--"that is, which all men ought to receive who desire to attain salvation; which is not so to be bp-understood, as if God could not save Nicholson on the Cat., without them; but that they are the Iunsoiitm means instrumental, and ordinary seals, Orde" f ky which God hath promised to convey the Causes and assure Christ's merits unto us, and tion and commanded us this way to receive them; 0aTMa" so that wilfully to neglect them, or to works, want them, when they may be had, is to folio, 1608. cast aside God's ordinance." Now, the Church of Rome doth declare, authoritatively: "Should any one say that the Sacraments of the New Law were not all instituted by Jesus Christ, our Lord; or that there are more or fewer than seven--namely, Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist" (or Lord's Supper), "Penance, Extreme Unction, Orders, and Matrimony; or that any Concii.
