Art and Artists of the Norwich School (Hardcover)

The 19th century Norwich school is the only English school of painting identifiable with the Italian and other continental schools that evolved around groups of artists of the more gregarious Latin temperament. These artists did manage to preserve their British individualism yet somehow maintained a deep bond which held the school together. In this new book the author explores the history of the School along with the lives and works of its artists, the Cromes, the Stannards and the Cotmans, Stark, Vincent and Hodgson, Thirtle, Bright and Middleton amongst many others. Their work includes not only the landscapes in oil of the Norfolk countryside for which they are well known, but also still lifes, fine architectural watercolours, delicate line and wash drawings and pastels. There has been a great upsurge of interest in the artists of the Norwich school in recent years and this book is a timely addition to the literature.
