This is a fascinating book, presenting 52 chapters of results on how to more effectively recognize and support gifted individuals. It provides a state-of-the-art overview of European research on giftedness and creativity, and various attempts to provide differential education to the highly able. The various topics include
-- cognitive approaches to intelligence and creativity
-- the life-long development of gifted individuals
-- the gender differences in ability and academic achievement
-- problems of the handicapped gifted, as well as many of the more tricky issues of identifying and educating the gifted.

However, the conception of this book goes far beyond the design that conference proceedings usually have. The chairpersons of the main symposia provide overviews and summaries of their sessions and point to the critical issues under discussion. The whole book is structured in ten parts, each of which is introduced by an editor's thoughtful comments.
