The municipality has a population of 2,626 (31 December 2009) and covers an area of 699.69 square kilometres (270.15 sq mi) of which 271.98 km2 (105.01 sq mi) is water. The population density is 6.14 inhabitants per square kilometre (15.9 /sq mi). The municipality is unilingually Finnish. The municipality has previously also been known as "Brkyl" in Swedish documents, but is today referred to as "Rkkyl" also in Swedish.
