He was re-offered the nomination in 1909, but declined. He lived in his house, 437 Abbot road, and taught at Michigan State University (at that time called Michigan Agricultural College) until he died in 1913; his burial location is unknown.It is rumored that his ghost still haunts the house on Abbot to this day.
