It was ridden by Timmy Hyde and trained by Jack Ruttle out of Hazelhatch Stud. It won by three lengths from Mac Moffat (25/1). Sired by Cottage, bred by Baron Edouard de Rothschild in France, who went on to sire two more Grand National Winners Lovely Cottage 1946 and Shelia's Cottage in 1948. Workman's pedigree can be traced back to the great stallion Marco, sire of three Grand National winners, who in turn was sired by the unbeaten Barcaldine.
