The story was retailed most energetically by Jane, who seemed to have no less affection than her master for the intelligent animal that had run her errands so well. The honest cook, whose geography was scarcely up to the mark, even went so far as to tell every one that he had swum all the way from Senegal. "And in proof of it," she added, "he was still wet when mistress and I found him at the door." I must admit that this version was not deemed altogether satisfactory by the sailors, who, considering the distance, and the difficulty of procuring provisions on the way, declined to believe in the possibility of such a feat. But in spite of this, a great desire was felt by all to see the hero of this strange adventure, and during the next week there was a constant succession of visitors at White Rock Villa. We may be sure that there was no lack of questions. They all wanted to know the how and the why of everything. Where did he come from? Who had brought him back? Was it possible that he had found his way back all by himself? Pigott invariably replied, --"Don't ask me anything, for I know nothing He went away; he has come back; and we are delighted, --that is all that I can tell you. How has he done it? You will be very kind if you will tell me, for I can't make it out myself, and should be very much obliged if any one would take the trouble to give me an explanation." Captain Pigott received the explanation when he least expected it. One day, as he was walking on the quay with his dog, who now was as constantly in attendance on him as his own shadow, near the little lighthouse he met Peter Paris, captain of the Utility, a smart ship, hail...
