The Drainage. ge Qf e town is low, which renders a regular system of drainage a matter of very great difficulty. An establishment is employed to keep the town and latrines clean, for the maintenance of which Rs. 3,350 were sanctioned for 1882-83; conservancy. 0f a gum 2,475 were expended in nine months ending with December 1882. The streets, &c, are swept daily and the sweepings, &c, thus collected, and other rubbish, are partly burnt in cinerators and partly buried away from the town. There are 12 leaf latrines, the same in number as last year; they are simple enclosures on sandy ground. They are cleared out twice daily and the contents are buried in pits in jungles beyond municipal limits. It is in contemplation to erect three pucka latrines. One objectionable feature in the conservancy of the town, noticed by the Sanitary Commissioner during his visit in November 1882, was that a urinal in a certain street emptied itself into the compound of the Sub-Jail, from where the urine had to be taken out in buckets. It was also very near the channel which takes in the drinking water for use in the prison. Us. 290 were spent on improvements to water-supply, several roads, &c, were sanitary worta repaired (Rs. 2,595), some drains were constructed (Rs. 1,0G6), and a urinal erected (Rs. 99). Was, on the whole, satisfactory. No epidemics occurred during the year. The cholera of 1881 ran into 1882 also and terminated in uryeconditionlth February. It was of an exceedingly mild character. No deaths occurred during the year under review; only 18 cases were treated. There was a slight prevalence of small-pox. The town was kept ...
