In this movie (that is based on a well-known computer game of the same name), clean-cut Mark Wahlberg plays Max Payne - a NYPD detective who, for thee years, has been on an obsessive investigation to discover who killed his beautiful wife and their infant son - and why.
The plot involves an apparently factual drug called Valkyr, that was developed originally for military experimental purposes, and the story takes an unexpected fantasy twist as it becomes entwined with Norse mythology (remember Richard Wagner's musical legend: "The Ride of the Valkyries"?). Yes, there is violent action aplenty - though it is interesting to note that the game itself carries a far more stringent age-restriction than the film!
Veteran actor Beau Bridges plays an interesting character role, and is almost unrecognisable as BB Hensley - Max's father's former partner; while Chris Bridges plays Jim Bravur - an internal affairs agent who is investigating Max.
I'm not sure that all the details we are fed are really relevant to the story, but the whole thing certainly holds one's interest!
Max Payne is a maverick cop with little regard for rules and nothing left to lose.
Hell-bent on revenge, he's determined to track down those responsible for the brutal murder of his family but his obsessive investigation takes him on a nightmarish journey where dark fantasy collides with stark reality.
