I shall go from this place without any regret; for now the war appears, for the present, at an end, and there is nothing left to hope for of, " honour and glory." I think the annexation of Pegu has made a very pretty termination to the Burmese war, on which the following copy of verses has been widely circulated. "THE WAR IN BURMAH." "The lion and the elephant fell into a dispute Because they could not settle it, which was the greatest brute; The elephant, a knowing beast, not destitute of spunk, Had seized the lion's dinner, and concealed it in his trunk. Of course the lion flared right up, but ere it came to knocks, He sent two wise ambassadors, the Serpent and the Fox Instructing them, 'My enemy, though mighty big, is clumsy, And once I get a slap at him, I'll serve him out eh dum se. Just tell him so, and let him know that, if he does not jine in, I'll spiflicate him totally, as sure as I'm a lion.' Forth went the bold ambassadors, to execute the mandate, And soon approached the elephant, whom mighty nobles farmed, eight.f The names of the steamers, f See Cox's Embassy to Ava, as authority for this. Then, before the monarch's presence, most respectfully unco verin', The wily serpent tells forthwith the message of his sovereign.
