His dissipated life had already seriously injured his health, so that his lungs had been gravely affected at the beginning of the winter, when he had gone to Monaco for the sake of the warm climate of the Riviera, and the congenial society of the little gambling town. Whether the one neutralised the benefit of the other, or whether his constitution was already wrecked, we did not know; but when everyone else left the place, poor Henry Alwyn remained there to die. I could not help thinking of the difference this might make in Chris's prospects. Would Chris really come home to be his father's heir, or would some unwelcome wife and son of Henry's, hitherto unsuspected, oust him of his rights? After such an unsatisfactory life as Henry's, one could not be surprised at anything. Happily, nothing of this sort occurred; and, after a fortnight's interval, we heard that Henry had died and that his parents were coming home. "You will have Chris home now," said Midge. "And Vincent too," replied his sister. "No," said Midge, sadly, "I don't believe he will ever come back till his name is cleared. He could not bear to live under a cloud." And my little maiden tried hard not to be envious of Phillis for the prospect of her lover's return, but it was rather hard work. "I don't want to be horrid, and not sympathetic," sobbed poor Midge; "but it will be so very hard for Vincent to stay out there when Chris comes back.
