is a most welcome return to form for Nicolas Cage, whose batch of films in the last few years have all been major disappointments. But this time, everything seems to click into place. The above-average acting, the constantly surprising storyline and the spot-on tense and exciting "action" sequences.
Cage plays John Koestler, a MIT professor, who with his son, comes across a 50 year old piece of paper filled with random numbers. These numbers soon chillingly indicate the dates and number of deaths of all the major disasters around the world in the past 50 years. John soon discovers that there are 3 more dates which are foretold, and he takes it upon himself to try to save as many innocent people as he can.
That summary sounds pretty straight-forward and predictable. But trust me, this movie turns out to be anything but. The script takes quite a few unexpected twists and turns, and there are a couple of creepy moments as well, supplied courtesy of a group of mysterious men hovering in the shadows... literally! And mention must be made of the astounding visual effects, which were highly effective and ultra-realistic, kudos to the director Alex Proyas, (who made Dark City and I, Robot).
Quite simply, one of the most surprisingly enjoyable and thrilling movies I've seen this year. The ending is one of the best movie endings you'll ever see this year! (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
In 1958, as part of the dedication ceremony for a new elementary school, a group of students is asked to draw pictures to be stored in a time capsule. But one mysterious girl fills her sheet of paper with rows of apparently random numbers instead.
Fifty years later, a new generation of students examines the capsule's contents and the girl's cryptic message ends up in the hands of young Caleb Koestler. But it is Caleb's father, professor John Koestler, who makes the startling discovery that the encoded message predicts with pinpoint accuracy the dates, death tolls and coordinates of every major disaster of the past 50 years.
As Ted further unravels the document's chilling secrets, he realizes the document foretells three additional events - the last of which hints at destruction on a global scale and seems to somehow involve Ted and his son. When Ted's attempts to alert the authorities fall on deaf ears, he takes it upon himself to try to prevent more destruction from taking place.
