A Sports Car of Poetry (Electronic book text)

." . . in extravagant conflict with the trend of my time, .no subtle expressiveness, only stumbling on rhyme, denouncing the anguish we cause to occur . . ."

Nkula grew up in the Desire Housing project, in New Orleans, at a time when illegal drug usage was so negligible as to be virtually non-existent. The youth occupied themselves with sports of all kinds. What violence there was usually took the form of fistfights some of which admittedly drew scores of observers. Murder especially by firearm was rare, practically unheard of.

But sometime around the early 1970 s, seemingly out of nowhere, murder arrived in inner city New Orleans "big time." But, as one, sudden, drastic turn deserves another in the "opposite" direction the city 's now nearly perennial reign as Murder capital does not have to be its future.

Throwing floodlights upon a growing darkness, Nkula makes effective use of a wide range of poetic styles and ideas. Helping to hammer home the central idea is a series of Interludes. As do many of the poems in "A Sports Car Of Poetry," these stylish, inventive, highly entertaining, often shocking, always irreverent narratives function as a "foot-to-the-foor," relentlessly driving home two undeniable truths: the deadly perils of ignorance; the stunning power of enlightenment.
