He informed me that on a visit which was paid to this place by a dignitary of the Establishment, who expressed himself surprised that Mr. Maddox had'built a chapel as well as a church, the latter gentleman is said to have replied, --"You perceive, however, my lord, that I have placed the church upon a rock, but the meeting-house on the sand and this is literally true, whatever may be their respective fates or periods of duration. Tan yr alt, Mr. Maddox's late residence, stands, as its name imports, under the hill, at a small distance from the town on the road to Bedd. gelert; having the church, surroundT ed with trees, and backed by magui? ficent mountains in the distance, as a most admired object in its view. Mr. Maddox appears to possess a bold, speculative, and sanguine mind, with liberal and enlarged views; but with, al too little of that prudential and cautious spirit, which is-essentially necessary to temper and direct them: and now that his works have ceased, and his projects failed, the population and prosperity of the town have declined, the inhabitants complain of pov erty, many houses are untenanted. and many remain unfinished, in various stages of progress. The canvas towns which Prince Potemkin caused to be erected at various places on the banks of the river down which he 'Sailed with his ImperiallYIistress, had this advantage.over the more substantial houses of Mr. Maddox, that they could be easily removed on the tracks of-their hired or compelled inhabitants, when they were obliged to remove to their next station.
