John Clark (Richard Gere), although happily married with a successful career, feels he is missing something in his life. On his way home from work on the train each night, the Chicago lawyer notices the beautiful and mysterious Paulina (Jennifer Lopez) in the window of a dance studio and impulsively enrols in dance lessons, in a bid to meet the enigmatic stranger. However when Paulina rejects his affections, he soon realises it is dancing that he has really fallen in love with. After a clumsy beginning, John picks up the rhythm to become the star pupil and encouragement from his classmates and teacher leads him to enter Chicago's biggest dance competition. As his confidence grows and friendships blossom he even rekindles Paulina's own lost passion for dancing. However, embarrassed by his new hobby, John keeps it a secret from his wife (Susan Sarandon), leading her to hire a private detective to find out what he's up to. With his secret about to be revealed, will it be two to tango or will he be waltzing alone?
