This book comprises three parts: the first documents the design and manufacture of the World War Two gliders, the creation of the American flying schools and the setting up of the pilot training programme. The second part concerns the use of the gliders on the Cotentin Peninsular on June 6th, 1944, detailing all the D-Day missions in which they took part. Part three covers the lesser-known operations by the same planes and crews in the Provence landings. The photographs and new documents which illustrate the book are accompanied by detailed first hand testimonies from German, French and American veterans. It features many original and previously unpublished wartime photographs and documents, and first hand combat experiences. There are bilingual English and French language text and captions.
