S. court was ordered by the Commissioners of Prisons to be transferred to the Reformatory Prison for Women; but, objection being made by the United States authorities, the sheriff declined to serve the order of removal, and the prisoner still remains in custody in Barnstable. Later in this report will be found a recommendation upon this subject, as in the opinion of this Board the question of authority should be definitely settled. In the following table the offences and sentences of the convicted prisoners committed to this institution by order of the courts of this State and of the United States are set forth: --BERKSHIRE COUNTY. For salaries, $4,664 40 other expenses, 11,087 44 $15,751 84 Receipts. From labor of prisoners, $350 00 other sources, 76 74 Balance 15,325 10 $15,751 84 Average number of prisoners, 75. Net cost per capita, $204.33. Number of volumes in library, 638. A smaller number of prisoners was committed here during the year than in 1893, and the number remaining in custody was 8 less. The average number, however, was exactly the same. As the expenditure for salaries was nearly that of the preceding year, and the other expenses were considerably more, the net cost per capita was increased.
