This work takes a psychological approach to mass communication. Issues in mass communication are discussed with an emphasis on their effects on behaviour and thought. In terms of theory, an integrated interdisciplinary approach is used, drawing on theoretical perspectives in both psychology and communication. The approach is rather eclectic, but with an underlying theme of the perceived reality constructed from interaction with the media. There are numerous examples and applications of concepts so that the reader is never left wondering what the importance of the concept discussed is. This third edition provides more references to computer-mediated communications like the Internet and World Wide Web. New boxes have been introduced with updated material and reference to many new research studies. Based on comments from adopters of the second edition, the author has tried to integrate theoretical perspectives more strongly throughout the entire book, particularly improving the articulation of the cognitive perspective. This book should be useful in psychology classes as a way of extending basic theories and research to this very important applied area or in journalism/communications classes looking for a cognitive or behavioural perspective.
