This work comprises confidence-building resource material for students preparing for GCSE English, and is geared to key stage 4 of the National Curriculum. It contains 12 short stories which provide the basis for studies on issues such as pollution, freedom and sexism. The aims of "Take It From Here" are - to use the GCSE Reading and Response unit to develop assignments on other areas of the syllabus; to provide examples of Standard English for formal writing and speaking, while encouraging students to work in groups, using informal speech to develop their own ideas; to set out a range of activities so that students can write and speak using appropriate tone and language for varying audiences; to improve vocabulary recognition by having new words reappear in different contexts, written and oral; to set up specific learning aims so that students see exactly what they will learn; to build confidence in oral work through group-work and guided role-play, leading students to listen closely, respond to arguments and express their own opinions; to help students prepare written work by showing them in advance the points by which they will be assessed; to give students the opportunity to share knowledge in planning, writing and assessing work together. Most units contain text and worksheets, vocabulary work, oral work, folder/project work and assessment sheets.
