Before him always was the picture of great packing plants to utilize the stock from the open plains and bring an end to the importation of meats from other markets, as well as to open yet another source of income for the farmer. The possibilities of great canning industries to care for the fruit and vegetable crops were all as real to him as the home in which he lived, and to effect the fullest materialization of these visions he gave every ounce of his strength and in the end his life. I worked for Mr. Rhodes, on that fence, until the commencement of the next school year and then for six years applied myself to such studies as were prescribed for me by him.
