I mean all those qualities of the temper, character, and conduct, which recommend themselves to men of every class, and of every name. When a man shows forth such "fruits of the Spirit," unbelievers are obliged to confess how lovely true religion is. I need not name them here in particular. Think for yourselves what qualities and dispositions are most dear to God, and pleasing, too, to man. Finally, if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think of these things. Who within our reach want our kindness? Are there any we can influence, who might, by our advice and sympathy, be rescued from ignorance, carelessness, and sin; or whom we might lead to serious thought? Do some require our forbearance and forgiveness? Are there others towards whom we might act the part of peacemakers? With what compassion did our Lord regard the wants of the bodies and souls of men, when He was on earth. We must imitate Him in this, for the disciples should be as their Master. "Think on these things." Give some attention to the subject I have tried to bring before you. Pray for the Holy Spirit's inspiration to think those things that be right. Think much of your Saviour. Contemplate gratefully all He has done, and is doing, for you. Meditate on the shortness of life, the second coming of Christ to judgment, and the happiness of heaven. Think of what you read in the Bible, also in good books, and apply to yourself what you read by thinking it over. Remember, the grace of God will alone enable you to do all this.
