The title of this book is selected for the want of a better one. Oral Surgery strictly peaking applies to surgery of the mouth only. It is the idea of the author that such a work should include all subjects under the heads of General Medicine and Surgery that could in any way be of interest to the practicing dentist. It should fall short of those pathological changes about the teeth treated by the dentist in his special practice. General pathology can in no way differ from pathological changes in the month. Up to a certain point the dental student is educated in all branches of General Medicine and his course should be as thorough in Chemistry, Anatomy, Physiology and Materia Medica as that of the student of General Medicine. From this point on, instead of pursuing Theory and Practice of Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics, Gynecology, etc., a departure is made into special dental subjects. Some knowledge of all of these subjects, however, is necessary in order that the dentist may have a fair conception of all forms -of disease, and be thereby better prepared to differentiate local pathological changes in his field of operation. The author is indebted to Park, Marshall, Cryer and Davis' Annual, Saunders, Journal of A. M. A., Cosmos, Items of Interest, and current dental literature in the preparation' of the following pages, and it has been the aim to give credit by using quotations when extracts or abstracts have been made. chapter{Section 4PART I.
