Excerpt from book: 144 THE BLAGDON CONTROVERSY. The following letters relating to the Blagdon Controversy, alluded to in the Memoir, are placed together. Many of them were without date, but this may be guessed at from the allusions contained in them. The dates of the chief facts connected with the dispute are as follows:? Meetings of Clergy and others at Blagdon, Nov. 1800; School closed, 16th Nov., 1800; School reopened, 25th Jan., 1801, after the Curate had been dismissed (Jan. 17th); Curate reinstated, Sept. 1801. Immediately after this event, Mrs. H. More finally closed the School. The following is the list of the persons chiefly concerned in the controversy:? aRev. Thomas Bere, Curate of Blagdon. Mrs. Hannah More, promoter of the School. Dr. Grossman, Rector of Blagdon and West Monckton. Mr. Young, the Schoolmaster of Blagdon. Dr. Moss, Bishop of Bath and Wells (died 1802). Dr. Charles Moss, his son, Chancellor of Wells (became Bishop of Oxford in 1807, and died 1811). Mrs. Parsons, wife of a yeoman of Blagdon, farming his own estate. Dr. Maclain, the celebrated Divine, and translator of Mosheim. aRev. John Boak, Rector of Brockley. Rev. Thomas Drewitt, Curate of Cheddar. aRev. Sir Abraham Elton, Bart., Clevedon Court. The Rev. John Inman. Mr. Hiley Addington, brother to Lord Sidmouth, Dr. Whalley's tenant at Langford Court. Mr. (Col.) Whalley, Winscombe Court. aRev. Thomas Whalley, Mendip Lodge. Rev. Richard Whalley, Vicar of Chelwood. aRev. William Eyre, Curate of Wcdmore. MRS. H. MORE ON THE BLAGDON CONTROVERSY. 145 Rev. Mr. Bevan, Curate of Congresbury. Rev. Mr. Jones, Rector of Shipham.
