Firstly, it has to be said, based on the trailer, I had very low expectations heading into this movie. I'm definitely a Tom Cruise fan, but this seemed like it would be a bland popcorn movie with little action and even fewer laughs. But surprisingly, I found it to be quite enjoyable. And sure, it's a popcorn movie, but it manages to keep you entertained for the entire movie, which is just under 2 hours long.
Cruise plays a renegade spy on the run from his colleagues, and he literally bumps into an innocent civilian who keeps tagging along in his adventures to stay one step ahead of his pursuers. They bicker, flirt, and still have time to dodge bullets and cars, as they try to bag the bad guys. The plot, admittedly, probably sounds very reminiscent of the Mission: Impossible movies, but it manages a light and frothy charm that keeps it from getting too serious.
The action is fast-paced and exciting, especially the car chase scenes, and there certainly are a few of those throughout the movie. The rest of the plot doesn't tread any new ground, but still the more than able cast certainly helps to keep you interested.
Cruise of course is STILL the man when it comes to high-octane action, and his pairing with Diaz is an inspired one as they certainly have hot chemistry. Add the lush locations, including Sevilla and a tropical island, and you're guaranteed a fun movie adventure. (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
