The wisdom and necessity of establishing Oak Hill Cemet@1'y "ins talked of by the citizens of Nyack and vicinity in 18471 and It was lg "nlvorsal "Pinion that such a move should be made. In Feb1'11fl-Ty' 184$ 3 Public meeting was held and it was unanimously resolved to dedlca G the ground as a place of burial. In June of that Year the plans we; Put into execution and the ceremonies, religious in their character, We appropriate and elaborate. The dedication service was performed by the Rev. Dr. Hardenburg and an oration was delivered by the Hon. Hugh Maxwell. David D. Smith was the owner of the land up to March 17th, 1865. He received four-fifths of the purchase money from the sale of plots and the remaining fifth was held by the Cemetery Board for the improvement of the grounds. On March 17, 1865, the cemetery was incorporated by a special act of the Legislature.
