This book, derived from papers presented at a 1989 UNIDIR symposium in New York, is divided into 6 parts which define defensive strategies and examine their credibility; examine these strategies in the European bipolar context; discuss the situation in North East and South West Asia and the possible applications of defensive strategies; examine conflict situations in the Middle East and Central America. Part 5 takes a global view of the problem and reflects on the symposium discussions for possible future research.
