Not illustrated. 1886 edition. Excerpt: ...Fane s beauty and popularity, to turn up their noses and sniff as she passed through the restaurant out on her way to dinner. Not that she cared a button for what any of them thought or did. Her ambition was bounded by the desire to do well in the eyes of Otis Chevasse, and just now she was unhappy on that subject. She had been hurt by his behaviour on the evening he had accompanied Leonard Fulton and his cousin to the lecture party. It is true that he sat by her side most of the time, but she had felt that his thoughts were on the opposite side of the room. He had kept his eyes fixed on Lizzie Lindesay, and seemed as though he were only there to anticipate her wants. And then he had accompanied her home--most unnecessarily, as his friend thought, considering she had Dr. Fulton for escort--and had refused to join Mrs. Fane at supper afterwards, as she had pressed him to do. And now it was four days since the party, and he had actually never spent an evening with her since. Beatrice Fane was aggrieved, and she meant to tell him so. Indeed, she had written him a very cool note to that effect, and quite expected it would bring him to her side. She was right. Mr. Chevasse did not like the style of her note. She called him ungrateful in it, and he felt that was a false accusation. No one could be more grateful than himself for all her kindness and hospitality. He had intended spending the evening at his club, but on the reception of her reproachful missive, he walked down to her rooms instead. She was looking very handsome, and she was splendidly attired, but his mind was full of Lizzie Lindesay s childish, dimpled graces, and he could not help thinking as he entered how old and worn Mrs. Fane looked by comparison...
