Employments not classified above in which the mediatorial services of the department have been in demand during this fiscal year comprise teamsters, bottle washers, express drivers, Westinghouse employees, miscellaneous employees at Pittsburgh, garment workers, lock makers, brickmakers, brewery workers, chemical workers, rubber workers, carriage makers, steamboat service, pattern makers, wireless telegraphers, molders, bricklayers, builders, shipbuilders, cigar makers, and plumbers. Teamsters.--Upon request of the general manager of the Cleveland Builders Supply Co. for mediation in a threatened strike of buildingmaterial teamsters at Cleveland, Ohio, over a question of recognizing the union in a contract establishing rates of wages, hours of labor, and working rules, A. L. Faulkner was appointed commissioner of conciliation. No strike had been officially called, but it was understood that one would begin in a few days if the employers refused to sign the proposed contract. The commissioner had numerous conferences with both employers and employees, and, having secured a compromise proposition from the employers, presented it to the local union, by which it was adopted unanimously. The agreement relates to the employment of all teamsters in Cleveland except ice drivers, truck drivers, and sanitary drivers, these being employed under other agreements. It recognizes the union on an open-shop basis, provides for an increase of wages approximating an average of $1.25 a week, with time-and-half pay from 5.30 to 8 p. m. and double pay after 8 p. m.
