The year 1881 closed, however, with a return to something like the old briskness and a general firmness in prices. Not only have large contracts been made for 1882, and remunerative prices, but sellers have been enabled in many cases to bring into successful operation the principle of the sliding scale, thus making the buyers participate in the risks attaching to the wages question, which has given rise to so many deplorable disputes between masters and men in this district. In my last annual report I was enabled to report that some improvement had takeu place in the financial condition and prospects of the mining industries of Cornwall, and owing to the further advance that has taken place in the value of tin, the chief article of mining produce, the tin mines of the country may now be described as being in a fairly prosperous condition. The returns of the produce of the mines of Great Britain are not made up to September 30. I am, therefore, unable to supply the information derivable therefrom for the year ending on that day. Tin ores.--The quantity of tin ores raised in Cornwall during the year 1880, was 13,705 tons, the value, $3,269,144; the average price per ton being $43.80 higher than that of 1879. Copper ores.--The quantity of copper ores sold in Cornwall during the yearended June30,1881, amounted to 41,133 tons21 cwts., which realized $096,321.07, but about 16,000 of such tons of this quantity were...
