Twas that Wisdom which we observe displayed all over the Universe, and of which there are so many signal Characters to be found within our selves. If therefore you annihilate God's Wisdom, as well as his Goodness and Justice, and if you likewise believe, he has no such Perfections in himself which are any ways answerable to those Vermes, you cannot avoid calling into question the truth of his Existence, and thereby you fall into Aheism again; though you had granted before, that there is a God. But this will appear more plainly, if we enter into a particular Examination of those Vertues. Though we are obliged to own an infinite distance between God and Man, and though in this respect we may very well affirm there is no manner of Proportion betwixt them; yet we must however acknowledge, that there is a kind of Conformity between some of God's Attributes, and some certain Qualities belonging to Man. We suppose it as a Truth already proved, that God does exist, and it is most certain that Man exists also. God has impressed Motion upon Matter; Man also puts it in agitation. And as Man is endowed with Knowledge, so neither can ybu suppose the Existence of God, without ascribing likewise some Knowledge to him. And indeed, if the World were framed as we fee it is, without the help of any Intelligence, I do not fee how we could avoid either taking Matter it self for the Supream Cause, or refusing to acknowledge any God at all.
