The following lists of the described specics of Sorth Americnn shells have bcen preparcd nt thc rcquert of this Institution, by sevcral nccom plishcd conchologists, for the purpose of IabclIing thc specimens in the Smithsouinn colIection. Applications having been made for copics of the lists, it has bmn though that their publication rould be generally useful, in facilitating the pre paratiou of catalogues, the labelling of collections, conducting oxcbanges, checking off faunas of particular rcgionr, etc. The series of lists is complete with the exception of that of the mari ie fauna of the Test Indin Province, including the shores of Florida, the Gulf coast, the west Indics, etc. On account of the groat extent of this pro vince, and the uncertainty in relation to many of its species, together i t h their irnperfcct representation in American conchalogical collections, it has been thought cxfldicnt to omit for the prcsc i a t list of its shells. As soon as such n list can be properlj prepared, it will be added to the series. In accordance with the views of s majority of the compilers of tbc lists, the authority given for each name refcrs to the origirlal describer of thc species, and not to the one j ho first published the name, both gencric and . spccific, as here printed. It will be readily understood that the Smithsonian Institution cannot vouch for the accuracy of the names of the lists or for their carn ilctcness, and that all responsibility in reference to thcsc 11oints rests with the several authors.
