Not illustrated. 1852 Excerpt: ...of this magnificentjhistory is on all hands admitted; yet such are the strong prejudices of Protestantism, with all its pretensions to liberality, that while the infidel Hume--the "malignant liar," as Cobbett most appositely styled him, and the mendacious Robertson--the most unscrupulous historian, perhaps that ever wrote--are perpetually used as class instructors and quoted as authorities, the Catholic and accurate Lingard is rarely met with and still more rarely alluded to. The vast increase of fame and the enlarged income which this publication brought to the author had not the effect of enlarging his ambition for ecclesiastical preferment or of drawing him from his beloved seclusion; and the immortal Historian of England died as he lived and where he lived, the humble priest of Hornby. He loved literature and privacy; and neither the Presidency of Maynooth College, nor the Episcopal rank, nor even the dignity of the Purple, which it is generally understood he might have attained, could lure him from his quiet retreat--made glorious by the priceless gem it contained. As independent as he was unassuming--his own great talents more than supplied all his wants; and he was always too dignified, too elevated in soul to flatter or to fawn. The new movement in this country his zeal made him view, of course, with complacency; but his admiration, like his faith, was for old Catholicity, and for those old-fashioned Priests who had through the darkness of proscription fed the lamp and diffused the light of true religion in England. Dr. Lingard was essentially of that fine old school to whose prudence, united with firmness, perseverance and fervour, we owe the present gratifying state of Catholicity in this country.
