"We enter upon it now, as we entered upon it last year. But let us stop, and look back. Let us examine ourselves. Let us ask, ' Have I gone onward on my heavenward ' journey ? Have I grown in grace and in the knowledge ' of my Lord and Saviour ? Did I last year learn more ' of His love and mercy and delight more to hear of the ' great things He has done for me ? Or did I pass it ' all by as a tale ofttold, which had grown wearisome ' to me ? Was my heart cold and unmoved when the ' seasons, as they passed, spoke to me of the manger of ' Bethlehem, and the cross of Calvary, and the open ' tomb of Eastertide, and the awful throne of the Judg- ' ment-day ?' Oh! let us begin afresh from this day. " Now it is high time to awake out of sleep." " The " night is far spent, the day is at hand; let us there- " fore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on " the armour of light." " "Wash you, make you clean," saith the Lord; " put away the evil of your doinga " from before Mine eyes; cease to do evil; learn to do " well." Let this be our Advent work. Let us thus keep the season named from the coming of the Lord ; and then, when " the coming of the Lord draweth " nigh," when we hear the voice of the Judge crying, " Surely, I come quickly," we shall be able to say with humble faith, and fervent love,?"
