Excerpt: ...Ah, then, we smoked in libraries or wrestled on the floor, And then we used carbolic soap, which now we use no more; We listened to our local wits, we heard the local bore. Alas alas for days that were, Which we recall in vain, When we worked and read the Sportsman In Caxton Street's domain. Cricket. THE HOSPITAL v. CLAYBURY ASYLUM. This match was played at Claybury on June 31 in ideal weather. James, winning the toss, sent Mitchell and Hayward in to bat. A capital start was made, 68 runs being scored before Mitchell was bowled for a characteristic 32. The other batsmen were completely overshadowed by Hayward, who amassed 84 before being dismissed. This is Hayward's highest and best innings for the Hospital, and was a very fine display, including thirteen fours. The whole innings closed for 201. Our opponents were quickly dismissed by Dr. Abrahams and Mitchell for 104, the former taking seven wickets for 72. Following on, the Asylum did even worse than before, only totalling 92, leaving us victorious by an innings and five runs. In the second innings Carr did the damage, taking six for 41. Our fielding in both innings was excellent. This was the first defeat the Asylum had sustained on their own ground this season. Appended are the scores: The Hospital. A. O.
