With an ever-increasing number of people heading out to the world's most remote locations, it is evident that a growing amount of mobile devices are going with them. The need for unlimited, off-grid power has never been greater and now, we can supply it.

Powertraveller has developed a world-first in off-grid power generation. The powermonkey expedition is a revolution in portable charging technology, bringing together multiple ways in which to naturally, yet efficiently generate power - all housed in strong, aluminium, waterproof casing.

The waterproof (IP65 rated) powermonkey expedition houses a 10,500mAh lithium polymer battery which can be charged in three ways; via hand-powered crank, solar or via the international AC mains charger.

The strong, ergonomic hand crank allows you to generate power at a comfortable speed thanks to the 32:1 gearing ratio. The unit features an LED that indicates the optimum speed for hank crank charging - when the LED is green, the hank crank is producing energy at an optimum, efficient level. The anodised, aluminium casing is ridged, providing a secure grip even if your hands are cold/wet or you're wearing gloves.

10 minutes of hank crank charges the internal battery by 1% - equivalent to a 6.7% charge of an iPhone 5s. Once the battery is charged, the hand crank folds away neatly or can even be removed completely if required.

The sun is the ultimate source of energy for our planet, so harnessing that energy is the most natural way to generate power. Supplied in the launch pack is the solarmonkey expedition - a solar panel housed in a very strong, lightweight, aluminium case which has been specifically developed to work with the powermonkey expedition. The solarmonkey expedition outputs 5 watts, 5V 1Amp and is capable of recharging the powermonkey battery unit in 12-15 hours in optimum conditions, perfect if you're in the desert, up a mountain or simply on the move. The aluminium acts as a heat-sync, making the panel both efficient and hard-wearing and it can charge devices even in low light conditions thanks to the MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracker) technology included.

The solarmonkey expedition is waterproof (IP65 rated) meaning that it can withstand water projected from a nozzle against the unit from any direction and is also dust-tight - perfect for when you're off the beaten track.

The powermonkey expedition is also supplied with an international AC mains charger that will work in over 150 countries around the world. The internal battery can be fully charged via AC mains in just 12 hours so you can be sure that you have power before you head off into the unknown. The international AC mains charger is a major benefit in remote areas where electricity may be limited or unpredictable.

Featuring both 12V DC and 5V USB outputs, the powermonkey expedition is capable of charging everything from iPads/tablets, two-way radios, satellite phones and smartphones, to GPS, head lamps and SLR cameras, plus a plethora of other devices. Users can also charge from both outputs simultaneously while charging the internal battery, giving you the freedom to keep working.

Both input and output cables are connected via a unique IP67-rated housing system, ensuring all connections remain waterproof, for up to 1 metre for 30 minutes.

The powermonkey expedition has been cleverly designed so that additional charging options can be added at a later date. Whilst the hand crank, solar and AC mains are currently the primary power generation option, supplementary options will include wind and water (currently in R&D), steam turbine, gas and hydrogen fuel-cell, so whatever situation you find yourself in, the powermonkey expedition ensures your essential devices will never run out of power.

This revolutionary product is the culmination of Powertraveller's expertise in portable charger manufacturing and feedback from extreme ambassadors using our products in the field; including mountaineers Squash Falconer and Kenton Cool, plus legendary explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

It's worth noting that the iPad can be charged directly from the standard USB socket but will charge faster when using the supplied cable via the DC out port. You can also hook it up to the Samsung Galaxy Tab using one of our Powertraveller Galaxy Tab Cables and then plugging your Samsung Tab cable into that!

Waterproof for 30 minutes up to 1 metre - and shock resistant, the powermonkey extreme is perfect for the outdoor, marine & adventure enthusiast, as well as military & aid agencies. Featuring an LCD screen which displays battery capacity level and working status (on/off), its unique one touch friction swipe ON/OFF control is designed so the friction switch can only be turned on if swiped from left to right, which helps to reduce the risk of it being accidently turning on when not in use. To turn the powermonkey extreme on, swipe the panel from left to right with your thumb. To turn off, swipe with your thumb from right to left. When the 5V device or tablet is fully charged, the auto shut-off function means the powermonkey extreme will turn itself off after 2 minutes, so the user does not have to monitor the charge state of the device being charged - thus saving power.

The powermonkey extreme can be recharged in three ways; via the universal mains charger, via the solar panel or via USB. Whilst the unit is recharging, the LCD screen will be red, once fully charged, the screen will turn green. When the unit is in use, the screen will be blue!

The rugged, clam-shell design solar panel offers 3 Watt max output, allowing full recharge of the powermonkey extreme within 15 hours in optimum light conditions. The powermonkey extreme also has a solar energy detection feature which activates the incorporated state-of-the-art MPPT (maximum power point tracker) technology, allowing the solar panel to charge the powermonkey unit more efficiently in low light conditions. Users can also simultaneously use the solar panel to charge the powermonkey extreme whilst it is charging their device.

The solar panel can be attached to tents or rucksacks via the included Velcro strap, so is perfect for hiking and is designed to take the knocks and spills of both the power hungry adventurer and the busy traveller.

The Polysilicon solar panel offers photovoltaic efficiency up to 17% and features a USB output, fully supporting Apple iPhone/iPod, mobile phones and other 5V gadgets such as portable games consoles, handheld GPS systems, etc. The solar panel can fully charge the powermonkey extreme in approx 15 hours.

The powermonkey extreme unit weighs 242g and measures 152 x 59.5 x 28mm, whilst the solar panel weighs 214g, measures 171 x 90 mm and is 18mm deep when folded. The unit has a very low static wastage (meaning you can leave it for up to 1 year and it will still hold 75% of its charge) and includes a whole host of safety features to give you total peace of mind
