It is estimated that 1.5 million infants undergo surgery and anesthesia in the USA each year. However, there are serious concerns within the pediatric anesthesia community regarding the safety of anaesthesia in infants and children. There is mounting evidence from animal studies that anesthetics in common clinical use are neurotoxic to the developing brain and cause long-term neurobehavioral abnormalities. Essentials of Anesthesia for Infants and Neonates provides a comprehensive guide to the special needs of infants undergoing anesthesia. It focuses on the first year of life, the time when anesthesia mortality and morbidity is highest. Chapters are illustrated in color throughout, and include sections on newborn physiology for anesthetic management, specific procedures, pain management, and topics such as regional anesthesia and sedation. Written by nationally recognized experts, this book will become an invaluable point of reference for any physician interested in pain management in the first year of life.

Every ambulance clinician has experience of patient pain. In UK ambulance services, we pride ourselves in treating that pain, but without necessarily truly grasping the underlying principles of it or its devastating effects on the patients' lives. People with chronic pain deal with their pain differently to those who suffer an acute illness or injury and it is important that our treatment regimens meet the specific needs of all the patients we serve. Working with our colleagues in the medical profession, we should provide a seamless analgesic armamentarium so that a patient who experiences any type of pain is provided with early relief from that pain. As the paramedic profession grows in maturity, we anticipate that our range of pain relief will grow to accommodate the many and complex needs of the patients within our communities, with the support of evidence-based research. This book, whilst by no means definitive, is designed to introduce themes and encourage discussion amongst prehospital ambulance staff, thereby keeping pain management in the forefront of our assessment and treatment within the ever-evolving field of prehospital care. Pain: an ambulance perspective includes: *An introduction to pain and its pathophysiology *A range of assessment tools for adults and children *Pain relief available to specialist paramedics *Summaries for each chapter

Pain is a personal experience, which everyone encounters at some time, that for some unfortunate individuals becomes a permanent factor in their quality of life and clinical treatment. This is the first book to provide a comprehensive, integrated and accessible account of the experience of pain and its implications. It was written for psychologists, doctors, therapists, counsellors, and nurses in both academic and treatment settings. The experience of pain is examined at all stages from first symptoms of pain and how they relate to personal, social and cultural beliefs and attitudes, through the consultation and treatment process, personal coping, and the effects of pain on patient and carers. At every stage the discussion is based on relevant psychological concepts and a review of the latest research. The book provides an integrated, multidisciplinary account of cognitive, biological and social aspects of pain. An emphasis on social psychological processes leads to a new model of pain that will enlighten both teaching and treatment and guide further research. Accounts of pain often deal with specific, specialised aspects but many students and healthcare professionals need a wider, more person-centred understanding of pain, and will find this book a valuable resource and guide to the experience of pain and its implications for treatment and coping.
Cardiac Anesthesia: A Problem-Based Learning Approach provides a comprehensive review of the dynamic and ever-changing field of cardiac anesthesia. Its problem-based format incorporates a pool of multiple-choice questions for self-assessment. Each of its 36 case-based chapters is accompanied by questions and answers, accessible online in a full practice exam. The cases presented are also unique, as each chapter starts with a case description, usually a compilation of several actual cases; it then branches out through case-based questions, to increasingly complex situations. This structure is designed to create an authentic experience that mirrors that of working through the nuances of a complicated clinical scenario. The discussion sections that follow offer a comprehensive approach to the chapter's subject matter, thus creating a modern, complete, and up-to-date medical review of that topic.

There are relationships that exist between neuroanesthesia, neurosurgical procedures, individual patient pathology and the positioning of a patient for said procedure. A comprehensive examination of these relationships, their association with patient morbidity/mortality and how to approach these issues in an evidence-based manner has yet to become available. Positioning related injuries have been documented as major contributors to neurosurgical/neuroanesthesiology liability. This text examines these relationships. It provides considerations necessary to the correct positioning of a patient for a neurosurgical procedure for each individual patient and their individual pathology. In other words, this text will demonstrate how to construct the necessary surgical posture for the indicated neurosurgical procedure given the individual constraints of the patient within the environment of anesthesia and conforming to existing evidence-based practice guidelines. Sections will address physiological changes inherent in positioning in relation to anesthesia for neurosurgical procedures, assessment of patient for planned procedure, as well as considerations for managing problems associated with these relationships. Additional sections will examine the relationship between neurosurgical positioning and medical malpractice and the biomechanical science between positioning devices and neurosurgical procedures. Neurosurgery and its patient population are in a constant state of change. Providing the necessary considerations for the neurosurgical procedure planned under the anesthesia conditions planned in the position planned, often in the absence of multicase study literary support, without incurring additional morbidity is the goal of this text.
The highly anticipated new edition of Pain: a textbook for health professionals (previous subtitle a textbook for therapists) has undergone a major rewrite in order to reflect the rapid developments in the field of pain management. It highlights an effective and evidence-based method, providing the theoretical basis to help with the assessment and management of persistent pain, while also discussing in depth a range of specific approaches. Pain: a textbook for health professionals is written emphatically from a biopsychosocial perspective. In order to set the scene, the introductory section includes chapters on the patient's voice and social determinants of pain. This ensures that the deeply personal and social aspects of pain are not lost among the more technical and biological commentary. These aspects provide an overall context, and are revisited in chapters on participation of life roles, work rehabilitation and psychology. The basic science section includes key chapters on the psychology, neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of pain. This provides a basis for subsequent chapters on specific approaches such as pharmacology, physical therapy and complementary medicine. Pain in specific patient groups, including children, the elderly and those with cancer, are dealt with in separate chapters, as are pain problems such as complex regional pain syndrome and chronic spinal pain. Although the emphasis of the book is on long term pain, acute pain is discussed as a possible precursor and determinant of chronicity. "The book covers a multitude of facets with regards relieving a patients pain, there are sections for pharmacological actions, rehabilitation, manual therapy and exercise therapy to name a few. The book is well researched and gives a very comprehensive overview of the major factors a therapist would require to treat pain." Reviewed by: Physical Therapy In Sport, Date: Oct 14 Patient-centred approach to care - advocates listening to the patient's voice Covers social determinants of pain Guides the reader from pain psychology to the practical application of psychological interventions Learning aids - chapter objectives, reflective exercises, case examples, and revision questions Emphasizes an evidence-based perspective Written by an international team of experts topics such as pain in children and the elderly, pain education for professionals, disability and medico-legal aspects expanded focus on complex regional pain syndrome, acupuncture and psychology improved layout for a better learning and studying experience
