Horror films provide a guide to many of the sociological fears of the Cold War era. In an age when warning audiences of impending death was the order of the day for popular nonfiction, horror films provided an area where this fear could be lived out to its ghastly conclusion. Because enemies and potential situations of fear lurked everywhere, within the home, the government, the family, and the very self, horror films could speak to the invasive fears of the cold war era. "I Was a Cold War Monster" examines cold war anxieties as they were reflected in British and American films from the fifties through the early sixties. This study examines how cold war horror films combined anxiety over social change with the erotic in such films as "Psycho," "The Tingler," "The Horror of Dracula," and "House of Wax."
As artists push further and further beyond their, and our, comfort zones, this book aims to help decipher the bizarre and often intimidating aspects of modern and contemporary art by exploring twenty works of art in terms of seven `keys'. History, biography, aesthetics, experience, theory, criticism and the market represent conventional `modes of existence' for every artwork discussed, but in a fascinating variety of ways. Simon Morley shows how twenty well-known but little-understood works of art can serve as useful springboards not only for understanding each other, but also for appreciating works by the same artists, and from the wider world of art in general. Rather than proceeding on the basis of familiar art `movements' or `-isms', Morley focuses on just twenty individual works of art, from Matisse's The Red Studio to Doris Salcedo's Untitled. Representing a variety of media, styles, subjects and intentions, being the creations of men and women of different periods and places, coming from disparate social and ethnic backgrounds, these works show a rich diversity in modern and contemporary art.

Have you been tinkering with mosaics for a while, but feel that you need to take it to the next level? Or are you a beginner looking for a challenge? Then this is the book you need. It looks at mosaics as an art form, where line, colour and texture all combine to produce beautiful works of art. The stunning photographs gracing every page are both inspiring and informative. Starting out as a textile designer, the author recognises how important the choice of design is when you start a mosaic project. This book will teach you how to choose the right design and translate it into a template, allowing you to 'paint' with the mosaic tiles. The technical information supplied will guide you through the selection process of the right design, teach you about the various tiles available, surfaces to work on and which ones to choose for which conditions, materials and tools needed as well as the different mosaic techniques that can be used to complete your project. You will also find suggestions for alternatives if supplies are hard to find in your area. The step-by-step projects are lovely and can be followed exactly, but the author urges crafters to make the projects their own and bring their own personality into them by playing around with colours and texture. The projects include big and small items for the home or to give as gifts, with alternative ideas and suggestions if you prefer a different look or feel. Mosaics is so much more than just placing tiles next to each other and in this book you will discover just how rewarding this craft can be.
