A 14 year-old Andrew Lloyd Webber chanced upon the painting of the Flaming June. He was a budding collector and his hobby was financed by his grandmother, who had just shelled out GBP50 for three huge, beautifully-illustrated volumes of Dugdale's History of Ancient Abbies and Monasteries. The boy described in detail the painting he fell in love with, but his grandmother was adamant: 'I will not have Victorian junk in my flat'. This comes near the opening of the real story of Ada Pullen (Dorothy Dene) who became the favourite model of Lord Leighton who was President of the Royal Academy. This book tells the story of Ada's life, success and Celebrity - and of the painting. Lloyd Webber's grandma was wrong. The current value of the painting is GBP14 million

for SATB (with divisions) and piano or chamber orchestra Rutter's charming piece sets a secular text by the composer that emphasises the significance of music and harmony in an ephemeral world. A simple accompaniment figure in the piano provides the backdrop to alternating unison and polyphonic verses that manage to capture both nostalgia for what was and optimism for what is to come.
for SATB and piano or orchestra Tree of Life is an expansive setting of an evocative text by David Warner that depicts the sacred archetype of the life-giving tree through the cycle of all four seasons. The lyrics, coupled with simple, memorable melodies, speak of spiritual planting and growth, nourishment, and an abundant harvest; each observation is punctuated by an 'Alleluia' as an expression of praise and gratitude. Wilberg's imaginative orchestration creates an abundant soundworld, with arching woodwind phrases, sweeping strings, and a cacophony of handbells that lifts the closing alleluias skywards in celebration. This is the title track on the Tabernacle Choir's 2018 CD release.

In this book, Terry Kurgan begins with a family snapshot made by her Polish grandfather in 1939 on the eve of the war. Presenting this evocative image as a repository of multiple histories—public, private, domestic, familial and generational—she sets off on a series of meditations on photography that give us startling insights into how photographs work: what they conceal, how they mislead, what provocations they contain. Each essay takes up the thread of the story of her family’s epic journey across Europe as they flee—country by country— Nazi occupation, until they reach Cape Town, South Africa. But Kurgan takes detours, circles back, diverts attention elsewhere, enriching and also disrupting the narrative with digressions on the way Google has changed our relationship to photography, on her grandfather’s eloquent daily journals, on the shipboard flirtations of her fascinating grandmother, on vanity, on self representation, on loss and return, home and exile. Kurgan’s richly satisfying essays are part memoir, part travelogue, part analysis and they demonstrate her sophisticated understanding of a medium that has long engaged her as an artist. Everyone is Present: Essays on Photography, Memory and Family.
for SATB unaccompanied The Scholar is a sensitive setting of Robert Southey's poem that explores a man's kinship with the dead. With Bednall's characteristic metrical fluidity and effective word setting, this piece will provide a moment of quiet reflection in a concert programme.
Have you been tinkering with mosaics for a while, but feel that you need to take it to the next level? Or are you a beginner looking for a challenge? Then this is the book you need. It looks at mosaics as an art form, where line, colour and texture all combine to produce beautiful works of art. The stunning photographs gracing every page are both inspiring and informative. Starting out as a textile designer, the author recognises how important the choice of design is when you start a mosaic project. This book will teach you how to choose the right design and translate it into a template, allowing you to 'paint' with the mosaic tiles. The technical information supplied will guide you through the selection process of the right design, teach you about the various tiles available, surfaces to work on and which ones to choose for which conditions, materials and tools needed as well as the different mosaic techniques that can be used to complete your project. You will also find suggestions for alternatives if supplies are hard to find in your area. The step-by-step projects are lovely and can be followed exactly, but the author urges crafters to make the projects their own and bring their own personality into them by playing around with colours and texture. The projects include big and small items for the home or to give as gifts, with alternative ideas and suggestions if you prefer a different look or feel. Mosaics is so much more than just placing tiles next to each other and in this book you will discover just how rewarding this craft can be.
