If The Kinks' "Waterloo Sunset" had been released under its original title, "Liverpool Sunset", would it have had the same impact? Was "Greensleeves" really written by Henry VIII? And how did The White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" become globally adopted as a football chant? Like its bestselling predecessor, THE LIFE OF A SONG VOLUME 2 contains the stories of 50 songs, originally published in FT Weekend, that unearth each song's biography. These are also the stories of how songs took on new life following their release: how, for instance, "Wild Thing" helped launch the career of Jimi Hendrix in America. Packed with intriguing factoids, these bite-sized essays will delight music lovers and send you scurrying back to listen to the songs in all their beauty and mystery.
Founder of one of the most influential and successful rock bands of all time, legendary Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page has nevertheless remained an enigma. In this definitive and comprehensive biography of his life so far, Chris Salewicz draws on his own interviews with Page and those closest around him to unravel the man behind the mystery. Having sold over 300 million copies worldwide, Led Zeppelin was the biggest band of the '70s and has been loved by the legions ever since. From his own conversations with Jimmy, the rest of Led Zeppelin, old girlfriends, tour managers and session musicians to name but a few, Salewicz reveals the many trials and tribulations which transformed the middle class boy from the Surrey suburbs into one of rock's most enigmatic frontmen. Detailed, thrilling and expertly researched, Salewicz discovers a man who was prepared to die for his art; who justified heroin use so he could harness its narcotic focus whilst making albums, and who overcame numerous death threats during this time. A warrior magician, Salewicz delves into the many skeletons and eccentricities in Page's closet, contextualising him against a background of London gangsters, deaths, and power struggles which Page has continued to rail against to this day, even within his own band. As entertaining as it is insightful, and from a writer who experienced first-hand the Led Zeppelin furore, this promises to be as close to a Jimmy Page autobiography as fans can get.
for SATB (with divisions) unaccompanied I my Best-Beloved's am was written in 1999 for a BBC Singers broadcast concert on the theme of the Seven Sacraments. This a cappella anthem focuses on the theme of marriage - setting the nuptial responses from the old Tridentine Catholic marriage service and stanzas from Francis Quarles's poetic paraphrase of the Song of Solomon - but, as the Song of Solomon is often understood as symbolic of the love between Christ and his Church, is also suitable for use throughout the Church year. Gregorian chant is the prevalent musical influence, and the male and female voices are offset against each other in an effective contrast.
for cambiata 1, cambiata 2, baritone, and piano An original composition on a traditional and well-loved text, this is a pulsating, rhythmic piece that displays Tarney's keen sense of texture and lines that appeal to young singers. The harmonic language is folk-inspired but with exciting chromatic shifts that are part of the composer's accomplished style.
for CCBar and piano This original suite, written for the Warwickshire Youth Choir, represents an extended concert item at the centre of the Emerging Voices series. It sets anonymous instructions found in packaging to general household goods, providing amusing and theatrical highlights as well as musical interplay and formal episodes.
for SATB unaccompanied and optional flute This warm and tender carol sets an evocative text by Norman Nicholson depicting Mary's gentle nurturing of her child. There is a beautiful simplicity in Chilcott's setting, which features sumptuous harmonies, lyrical melodies, and an optional part for flute that weaves in and out of the texture. The flute part is printed in the vocal score.

When it was first published in 2017, Jesse Fink's masterful biography of Bon Scott became an international sensation: it made the cover of Classic Rock magazine, threats were made against the author, and there was talk among some AC/DC fans of boycotts and book burnings. So why the uproar?
The legend of the man known around the world as 'Bon' grows with each passing year. In death, AC/DC's trailblazing frontman has become a rock icon. But so much of his story is myth.
Bon: The Last Highway tells the unvarnished truth.
The 1977–80 period forged the legend of AC/DC. There wasn’t a harder working band on the road in America. But, as Fink reveals in a journey that takes the reader from Austin to Miami to London, the relentless AC/DC machine was threatening to fall apart.
With unprecedented access to Bon's lovers, newly unearthed documents and a trove of never-before-seen photos, this updated edition contains a new introduction and more revelations about the singer's death, which should dispel once and for all the idea that Scott succumbed to acute alcohol poisoning on 19 February 1980.
Meticulously researched and packed with fresh information, Bon: The Last Highway is an affectionate, honest tribute to a titan of rock music.
for CCBar and piano This arrangement of the well-loved spiritual celebrates gospel style in all its colours, through rhythm, close harmony, memorable melody, and piano riffs. Ian Crawford is Director of Music at The King's School in Macclesfield and musical director of Cambiata North West.
'A masterpiece ... a moving image of post-war Poland, and the first breathing of one of the essential voices of the twentieth century... the master of literary reportage' The Times Literary Supplement When the great traveller-reporter Ryszard Kapuscinski was a young journalist in the early 1960s, he was sent to write about the farthest reaches of his native Poland. The resulting essays brought together here reveal a place as strange as any of the distant lands he visited on foreign assignments: caught between ties to the past and dreams of escape, a country on the edge of modernity. 'Kapuscinski trascends the limitations of journalism and writes with the narrative power of a Conrad or Kipling or Orwell' Blake Morrison

for SATB unaccompanied This high-energy, majestic setting of well-known words from the psalms is a welcome addition to the service repertory. The changing metre brings the text to the fore, and the semiquaver movement that passes between parts creates a sense of motion and drive that is fitting for this uplifting and joyous hymn of praise.
Everyday Wonders: The Girl from Aleppo tells the extraordinary story of Nujeen Mustafa, a Kurdish teenager with cerebral palsy forced by war to flee her home and embark on an arduous journey to Europe with her sister. It sets a specially-written text by Kevin Crossley-Holland and is in five movements: 'Orphans of the World' is centred on Nujeen's life in Aleppo; 'Thousands milling at the border', 'I had never seen the sea before', and 'A lost tribe pushed from border to border' depict a refugee's perilous route across borders and waters; and 'Everyday Wonders', in which the teenager reflects on the 'everyday' joys of her new life. In response to the vivid text McDowall employs a wealth of musical effects, including chorales, rhythmic spoken sections, body percussion, and a solo violin part infused with Middle Eastern flavours. The prevailing mood of Nujeen's story is embodied by the final line of a chorale that opens and closes this unique concert work: 'singing the song of life itself.'
for CCBar & piano This fine arrangement of the popular sea-shanty 'Haul away' provides enjoyment and learning opportunities through call-and-response, opportunities for solos, amusing (and historical) lyrics, and an appealing, catchy chorus. A footnote makes further suggestions for choreography and how to inject the drama of the open seas.
