This book is a richly illustrated history of the Wardle family of Leek, Staffordshire, which rose to prominence in fine textile production in the second half of the nineteenth century. At its core is an object-centred exploration revealing how an entrepreneurial family responded to complex international factors. Beautiful dyed, printed and embroidered textiles were created in Leek using traditional craft skills. Followers of the Arts and Crafts Movement and Gothic Revivalism, as well as Art Needlework and Aestheticism, benefited from the family enterprises that flourished despite rapid industrialisation. The Wardle family's rich legacy is played out against the backdrop of the Anglo-Indian silk trade. Thomas Wardle travelled in India and integrated Indian designs into British silk production. His work attracted William Morris, Walter Crane and A. L. Liberty, among others, and their designs, printed by Wardle, were internationally applauded. This authoritative book is the most detailed account to date of the Arts and Crafts movement in Scotland. Arts and Crafts ideas appeared there from the 1860s, but not until after 1890 did they emerge from artistic circles and rise to popularity among the wider public. The heyday of the movement occurred between 1890 and 1914, a time when Scotland's art schools energetically promoted new design and the Scottish Home Industries Association campaigned to revive rural crafts. Across the country the movement influenced the look of domestic and church buildings, as well as the stained glass, metalwork, textiles, and other furnishings that adorned them. Art schools, workshops, and associations helped shape the Arts and Crafts style, as did individuals such as Ann Macbeth, W. R. Lethaby, Robert Lorimer, M. H. Baillie Scott, Douglas Strachan, Phoebe Traquair, and James Cromar Watt, among other well-known and previously overlooked figures. These architects, artists, and designers together contributed to the expansion and evolution of the movement both within and beyond Scotland's borders.
The Della Robbia Pottery was an integral part of the British Arts and Crafts Movement. The intention was to produce artistically designed ceramics for architectural and domestic use, inspired by works from sixteenth-century Italy and the British Pre- Raphelite tradition. The guiding philosophy of the founder, Harold Rathbone, was that of William Morris, and he followed this rigidly, encouraging his pottery artists to express themselves freely but deploring slickness and any semblance of mass production. Whilst this resulted in some inspired and memorable designs, other pieces lacked sophistication and were not easy to sell. The Pottery never made a working profit, and when artistic tastes changed in the 1900s it was forced to close. Della Robbia wares have recently enjoyed a revival in popularity and this comprehensive, beautifully illustrated history examines the background circumstances and objectives of the pottery, as well as the lives of those who worked there.
There is a renewed and growing interest in the Arts and Crafts movement, in reaction to modern mass production of domestic items and building types, and to the voiding of craftsmanship from contemporary work. William Simmonds exhibited the dedication and the spiritual discipline that were at the root of the Arts and Crafts movement. Now that the illusory aesthetic of modernism has lost its appeal more and more people are turning back to the Arts and Craft period, in which an aesthetic more suited to the modern world was being discovered and propagated.
Charles Francis Annesley Voysey (1857-1941) is chiefly remembered today as one of the leading domestic architects of the early twentieth century. Before his career was established, however, to supplement his income he started to design fabrics and wallpapers, and became as successful a designer as he was an architect. Although the themes and components of his decoration are typical of his time, Voysey's designs remain as distinctive as his houses. They are clear and authoritative, and show a sense of colour that was exceptional in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. The Royal Institute of British Architects drawings collection includes a large number of Voysey's designs, making it one of the most extensive archives for a designer of the time. The collection covers a period of over forty years, starting in 1887, and includes both commercial designs and others, more revealing about the designer himself. Stuart Durant's study of Voysey's work and selection of over sixty of his designs makes the gems of this collection available in print for the first time and presents an absorbing study of Voysey's working methods and artistic theories. Voysey can now be seen as one of the major figures in British design history.
