Bully Proof (Paperback): Gail Dore Bully Proof (Paperback)
Gail Dore
R200 R99 Discovery Miles 990 Save R101 (51%) Ships in 7 - 10 working days

Every day, thousands of South African children go to school filled with terror because they know they’re going to be bullied. Children who are targeted by bullies are at enormous risk, yet many parents don’t know why it is happening to their child, or what to do about it.

Bully Proof looks at every aspect of bullying, from name-calling, taunting and rumour-mongering to physical assault, and examines why and how bullies behave the way they do, and what can be done to help them and their victims. The more we understand bullying behaviour, the better we can address the underlying causes and put effective controls in place.

Studies have shown that the 'whole school' approach, involving pupils, teachers and parents, is by far the most effective method of reducing incidents of bullying, as well as limiting the potential for future incidents. Implementing an effective anti-bullying campaign is not just about changing the behaviour of a few maladjusted children; it is about changing the philosophy of the entire school.Using a step-by-step approach, this book provides educators, parents, counsellors and children with the tools they need to develop a successful anti-bullying programme.

For Alison - The Murder of a Young Journalist and a Father's Fight for Gun Safety (Hardcover): Andy Parker For Alison - The Murder of a Young Journalist and a Father's Fight for Gun Safety (Hardcover)
Andy Parker
R598 R489 Discovery Miles 4 890 Save R109 (18%) Ships in 7 - 11 working days

Renowned activist Andy Parker's account of the story that shocked America, the murder of his daughter, reporter Alison Parker, on live television, and his extraordinary ensuing fight for commonsense gun safety legislation and doing "Whatever It Takes" to end gun violence. On August 26, 2015, Emmy Award-winning twenty-four-year-old reporter Alison Parker was murdered on live television, along with her colleague, photojournalist Adam Ward. Their interviewee was also shot, but survived. People watching at home heard the gunshots, and the gunman's video of the murder, which he uploaded to Facebook, would spread over the internet like wildfire. In the wake of his daughter's murder, Andy Parker became a national leader in the fight for commonsense gun safety legislation. The night of the murder, with his emotions still raw, he went on Fox News and vowed to do "Whatever it Takes" to end gun violence in America. Today he is a media go-to each time a shooting shocks the national consciousness, and has worked with a range of other crusaders, like Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Lenny Pozner, whose son was killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School and brought suit against Alex Jones and Infowars, who claimed the shooting was staged. In For Alison, Parker shares his work as a powerhouse battling gun violence and gives a plan for commonsense gun legislation that all sides should agree on. He calls out the NRA-backed politicians blocking the legislation, shares his fight against "truthers," who claim Alison's murder was fabricated, and reveals what's ahead in his fight to do whatever it takes to stop gun violence. Parker's story is one of great loss, but also resilience, determination, and a call to action. Senator Tim Kaine, also a fierce advocate for commonsense gun laws, contributes a moving foreword.

#1 Bestseller Overcoming Grief Through the Humanity of OthersFred Guttenberg loved watching Mr. Rogers with his daughter and his son when they were little. Their favorite piece of wisdom was: In the midst of tragedy and catastrophe, find the helpers. "Always look for the helpers. There will always be helpers. Because if you look for the helpers, you'll know there's hope." -Fred Rogers, interview with Television Academy, 1999 Life changed forever on Valentine's Day 2018. What was to be a family day celebrating love turned into a nightmare. Thirty-four people were shot at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Jaime Guttenberg, a fourteen-year-old with a huge heart, was the second to last victim. That she and so many of her fellow students were struck down in cold blood galvanized many to action, including Jaime's father Fred who has become an activist dedicated to passing common sense gun safety legislation. Fred was already struggling with deep personal loss. Four months earlier his brother Michael died of 9/11 induced pancreatic cancer. He had been exposed to so much dust and chemicals at Ground Zero, the damage caught up with him. Michael battled heroically for nearly five years and then died at age fifty. This book is not about gun safety or Parkland. Instead, Find the Helpers tells the story of Fred Guttenberg's journey since Jaime's death and how he has been able to get through the worst of times thanks to the kindness and compassion of others. Good things happen to good people at the hands of other good people and the world is filled with them. They include everyone from amazing gun violence survivors Fred has met around the country to former VP Joe Biden, who spent time talking to him about finding mission and purpose in learning to grieve. If you have read books such as Eyes to the Wind, Haben, The Beauty in Breaking, The Book of Rosy, or We Are Not Here to Be Bystanders, then you'll love Find the Helpers.

The Bully Society - School Shootings and the Crisis of Bullying in America's Schools (Paperback): Jessie Klein The Bully Society - School Shootings and the Crisis of Bullying in America's Schools (Paperback)
Jessie Klein
R577 R494 Discovery Miles 4 940 Save R83 (14%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Choice's Outstanding Academic Title list for 2013 In today's schools, kids bullying kids is not an occasional occurrence but rather an everyday reality where children learn early that being sensitive, respectful, and kind earns them no respect. Jessie Klein makes the provocative argument that the rise of school shootings across America, and childhood aggression more broadly, are the consequences of a society that actually promotes aggressive and competitive behavior. The Bully Society is a call to reclaim America's schools from the vicious cycle of aggression that threatens our children and our society at large. Heartbreaking interviews illuminate how both boys and girls obtain status by acting "masculine"-displaying aggression at one another's expense as both students and adults police one another to uphold gender stereotypes. Klein shows that the aggressive ritual of gender policing in American culture creates emotional damage that perpetuates violence through revenge, and that this cycle is the main cause of not only the many school shootings that have shocked America, but also related problems in schools, manifesting in high rates of suicide, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self-cutting, truancy, and substance abuse. After two decades working in schools as a school social worker and professor, Klein proposes ways to transcend these destructive trends-transforming school bully societies into compassionate communities.

The fear of campus sexual assault has become an inextricable part of the college experience. Research has shown that by the time they graduate, as many as one in three women and almost one in six men will have been sexually assaulted. But why is sexual assault such a common feature of college life? And what can be done to prevent it? Drawing on the Sexual Health Initiative to Foster Transformation (SHIFT) at Columbia University, the most comprehensive study of sexual assault on a campus to date, Jennifer S. Hirsch and Shamus Khan present an entirely new framework that emphasises sexual assault's social roots-transcending current debates about consent, predators in a "hunting ground" and the dangers of hooking up. Sexual Citizens is based on years of research interviewing and observing college life-with students of different races, genders, sexual orientations and socioeconomic backgrounds. Hirsch and Khan's landmark study reveals the social ecosystem that makes sexual assault so predictable, explaining how physical spaces, alcohol, peer groups and cultural norms influence young people's experiences and interpretations of both sex and sexual assault. Through the powerful concepts of "sexual projects", "sexual citizenship" and "sexual geographies", the authors offer a new and widely-accessible language for understanding the forces that shape young people's sexual relationships. Empathetic, insightful and far-ranging, Sexual Citizens transforms our understanding of sexual assault and offers a roadmap for how to address it.

The opening chapter of Bullying in Schools: Prevention, Gender Differences and Perspectives presents an investigation which may help to further cross-national bullying studies by providing clear recommendations that will help researchers to take account of culturally appropriate comparisons. Chapter two explores literature on contexts within which bullying has been documented, interrogates whether bullying is influenced by any gender dynamics, and crucially reflects on the reaction of key stakeholders within the education system, towards eliminating it. Following this, a study is presented with the objectives to identify and analyse the prevalence of poly-victims, as well as determine how the levels of moral disengagement and the various defence mechanisms that victims use to explain abusive behaviour might function as predictors of poly-bullying. Theory and evidence of how parenting influences children's involvement in bullying at school, and considers whether child gender influences this relationship are reviewed. Additionally, the relationship between bullying and suicide with special attention to specific types of bullying and gender differences are examined. The study presented in the penultimate chapter examines the theoretical justification and experimental verification various methods to ensure effective prevention and psycho-pedagogical correction of bullying in school. The final chapter outlines an exploratory study of the extent of gender based bullying occurring in an inclusive elementary school, Sekolahku-MySchool, in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. In this qualitative study, two major issues facing education in Indonesia today, discrimination and bullying towards women, are addressed.
