This comprehensive reference textbook examines in detail physiological and pathophysiological aspects of the cardiovascular system and cardiovascular disease in the sporting population. In the first part of the book, the non-invasive and invasive diagnostic techniques employed in cardiology are systematically reviewed, with explanation of their indications and clinical utility. The second, more extensive part is devoted to clinical cardiology and covers the great majority of cardiological problems encountered among athletes and other sportsmen and -women. Syncope, cardiac arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death are extensively addressed, and guidance is provided on sports practice for individuals with different forms of heart disease. Cardiologic rehabilitation is discussed, and attention is also paid to the legal implications of diagnosed or unsuspected cardiovascular diseases for sportspeople. Sports Cardiology will be an invaluable resource for trainee and experienced health care professionals, including in particular cardiologists and sports medicine physicians. It will provide the knowledge required in order to make critical decisions regarding eligibility, thereby preventing tragic events and especially sudden death -- the most devastating occurrence in sport.

Since the publication of the third edition there have been several changes in the pathology and classification of these lesions. The current edition updates the status of heart tumours, with emphasis on newer findings, especially molecular advances. In most cases, the authors have followed the classification of the World Health Organization, whose updated volume on tumours of the lung, heart, and mediastinum is forthcoming. Because newer imaging modalities, especially cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and 3-D echocardiography are increasingly used in preoperative evaluation of heart tumours, the authors have introduced a chapter devoted exclusively to radiologic diagnosis. In addition, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour, a less common tumour of heart valves, is covered quite differently from the previous volume, since several reports and series of this childhood tumour have emerged. This atlas has carried over a discussion of lesions that are neither neoplastic nor hamartomatous, such as thrombi and some infections that can mimic tumours, because some of these lesions, especially thrombi, are among the more commonly-excised heart masses, and may present diagnostic challenge. This work is a useful source for physicians who wish to find a reference to classify a tumour of the heart, or update their knowledge of these lesions.

Vitamin D in Clinical Medicine (Hardcover): A. Giustina Vitamin D in Clinical Medicine (Hardcover)

Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent today not only among the elderly but pervasively throughout all ages of life. This is due, in part, to systemic diseases that affect vitamin D metabolism, to changes in lifestyle, such as insufficient exposure to sunlight, and to increased use of sunscreen. Apart from the obvious effects of vitamin D deficiency on skeletal metabolism, the problem is assuming even greater significance because observational and interventional studies have linked vitamin D deficiency to cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. This book addresses a variety of important issues that have emerged from this fast-moving area of clinical medicine. The topics include assays of vitamin D and its binding protein, effects on aging and associated complications, primary and secondary states of altered parathyroid hormone secretion, vitamin D in the growing years of children and adolescents, nutritional requirements, and vitamin D as it relates to systemic disorders such as diabetes mellitus. Vitamin D in Clinical Medicine aims to offer new insights, in an evidence-based way, on important issues related to vitamin D. It is written for general practitioners and internists, as well as for endocrinologists, nutritionists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, and oncologists.

Tetralogy of Fallot is the most common form of cyanotic congenital heart disease, and one of the first to be successfully repaired by congenital heart surgeons. Although "fixed", patients born with tetralogy of Fallot cannot be considered "cured". Improving survival and quality of life for this ever-increasing adult population will continue to challenge the current and future generations of cardiologists. Adult patients with tetralogy of Fallot should be seen by a cardiologist specializing in the care of adults with congenital heart disease, to be monitored for late complications. They need to be checked regularly for any subsequent complications or disturbances of heart rhythm. This monograph is intended as both an introduction to the subject and a timely, comprehensive review, and will be welcomed by adult cardiologists, pediatric cardiologists, internists, surgeons, obstetricians, and intensivists who wish to learn about the most recent discoveries and advances concerning tetralogy of Fallot in adults. It will also be of interest to advanced undergraduates wanting to learn more about the subject.

This book provides an excellent review of the modern management of heart disease in pregnancy, introducing related state-of-the-art research. Maternal circulatory status dynamically changes throughout pregnancy and delivery. The number of pregnancies complicated by cardiovascular disease has increased in recent years due to better outcomes for patients with congenital heart disease as a result of improved surgical techniques, newly diagnosed cardiovascular diseases such as channelopathy, and increased maternal age. Pregnancy once was a contraindication for women with cardiovascular disease; however, it has been found that many women with cardiovascular disease can tolerate pregnancy and delivery. On the other hand, cardiovascular events including maternal death do occur in some cases. Clinical knowledge and skills in both obstetrics and cardiology are required to manage pregnancy accompanied by cardiovascular disease. Seen in that light, this book provides essential reading for obstetricians, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, and all medical personnel involved in the care of pregnant women with heart disease and congenital cardiac disease.

This reference resource represents the consensus opinion a team of international specialists on the diagnosis and treatment of infective endocarditis (IE), many of whom have been co-authors of American or European guidelines on the topic. It is therefore a useful tool for many practitioners: cardiologists and cardiac imagers, cardiac surgeons, echocardiographers, specialists of internal medicine, neurologists, and infectiologists. Infective endocarditis (IE) is defined as an infection of the endocardial surface of the heart, which may include one or more heart valves, the mural endocardium, or a septal defect. Its intracardiac effects include severe valvular insufficiency, which may lead to intractable congestive heart failure and myocardial abscesses. If left untreated, IE is generally fatal. IE is a changing disease with new diagnostic techniques, new therapeutic strategies, more frequent elderly people and patients with prosthetic valves of intravenous drug users.

Injured mammalian hearts do not regenerate but scar. This is a major medical problem, as ischemic heart disease is among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Essential clues for human heart repair are uncovered when zebrafish and newt are found to regenerate cardiac muscle after injury. This book presents the major advances of the last decade in the field of cardiac regeneration. These recent advances include: demonstration that zebrafish, a genetically tractable system, can regenerate heart; the identification of several new stem cell populations in the heart; demonstration that stem cells can be used to improve heart function; and demonstration that induction of cardiomyocyte proliferation is a realistic future option to repair injured hearts. This book also provides detailed reviews of the research on model organisms capable of heart regeneration as well as innovative translational research to achieve regeneration in mammals, that comprises work on blood born stem cells, endogenous cardiac stem cells, paracrine factors, reawakening of cardiomyocyte proliferation, and bioengineering. More importantly, the book, in the concluding chapter, dovetails the studies with a comprehensive overview of clinical trials.

This atlas of postmortem angiography provides a summary of techniques that have been developed and used in order to visualize the human vascular system. The indications, advantages, limitations, and pitfalls of the different techniques are explained in detail through the use of examples from real cases and a wealth of informative images, as well as knowledge from the latest scientific works. Helpful recommendations are made concerning interpretation of the obtained radiological images, which will allow readers to start their own work in the field of post-mortem angiography or to ease and improve their practice. The atlas has been edited and written by members of an international working group created in 2012, "Technical Working Group Post-mortem Angiography Methods" (TWGPAM), who for the first time summarize their experiences concerning this new approach. Since findings explaining the reasons for both natural and traumatic death are often hidden within the vascular system, post-mortem angiography is of the highest importance in elucidating cause of death and may represent the key to minimally invasive autopsy.

Coronary artery bypass surgery has been developed since 1960s to overcome proximal coronary artery disease. Worldwide, the number of patients that are undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery is steadily increasing. Depending on diverse risk factors, one fifth of grafts are occluded at 1 year. For the remaining, graft patency last usually 8-15 years. This book brings together the main specialists in the field to review the current evidence on epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic, new imaging techniques and specific therapeutic modalities. This volume aims to update a complex subject represented by coronary graft failure. The authors of this monograph are interventional cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons and research scientists, who will be creating four parts and 71 chapters that are divided in order to give a uniform interpretation of this condition including all aspects of coronary graft failure This book not only provides the most up-to-dated scientific evidence in the field but in a two-step manner. Each chapter is divided into a at a glance part that reflects the basic evidence on the topic, and a "full picture" part that brings all what the advanced reader should be brought with.
