Hydraulic Fracturing in the Karoo: Critical Legal and Environmental Perspectives explores a broad-ranging set of questions related to proposed hydraulic fracturing or `fracking' in the Karoo. The book is multidisciplinary, with contributors including natural scientists, social scientists, and academics from the humanities, all concerned with the ways in which scientific facts and debates about fracking have been framed and given meaning. The work comprises four parts: Part 1 provides an international, legal, energy, economic, and revenue overview of the topic. Part 2 has a physio-geographic theme, with chapters on the inter-related aspects of water, geology, geo-hydrology, seismicity and biodiversity, as well as archaeological and palaeontological considerations. Part 3 focuses on public health, and sociological and humanities-related aspects, and Part 4 addresses the relevant laws, emphasising their implementation and the role of governance. The underlying theme of Hydraulic Fracturing in the Karoo: Critical Legal and Environmental Perspectives is one of caution. The book emphasises the need for collaboration between the natural and social sciences and the responsibilities of those charged with the implementation and governance of the fracking enterprise if South Africa hopes to effectively manage fracking at all.
Tower Bridge is one of the most famous bridges in the world. Designed by Sir Horace Jones (1819-1887) and engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry (1836-1918) over a period of eight years, it was the largest and most advanced bascule bridge ever completed when it opened in 1894, requiring 11,000 tons of steel and involving more than 400 construction workers. This impressive feat of engineering helped sustain the growing commercial activity at the docks and warehouses in East London, and the sudden influx of daily commuters brought in from the newly built London Bridge station. Still in full use today, the bridge is lifted an average of 850 times a year. This Victorian masterpiece remains a highly important crossing on the River Thames, as well as being one of London's defining landmarks. This compelling album of photographs by Harry Cory Wright allows us to experience the awe-inspiring structure of Tower Bridge in exquisite detail, from the intricate machinery and original mechanisms inside the control rooms and secret corridors, to the great cavernous space within the bascule chamber. It includes an interview with Senior Technical Officer Glen Ellis, who shares his own daily experience of lifting the bridge, evoking an incredibly vivid sense of `being there'.
Tower Bridge, close to the Tower of London, is one of the best-known and most recognizable bridges in the world. Opened on 30 June 1894, this combined suspension and bascule bridge was designed by architect Sir Horace Jones and engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry. This new book, published to mark the 125th anniversary of its opening, will explore the history of the bridge, set it into the context of the River Thames and its crossings, and will, above all, focus on its design and construction. Highly illustrated with old and new images, from material held in the London Metropolitan Archives to specially commissioned photographs, Tower Bridge: History * Engineering * Design is a major new illustrated study of a remarkable piece of architecture and engineering.

Whispers from the depths is more than just the story of the building of the Kariba Dam in the mid-1950s. Built in just five years against overwhelming odds, the dam is a monument to engineering excellence. Shrouded in political undertones, the construction of the dam was vital for the hydro-electric power it would provide for Zambia’s burgeoning copper industry. Little thought, however, appears to have been given to the future of the human and animal populations who lived in the valley that would be inundated when the dam was completed. The question has to be asked: Was this awe-inspiring man-made creation achieved at too high a cost in terms of the human suffering and environmental devastation it caused? Central to the story of Kariba was the fate of the Tonga people who had for centuries lived in the Gwembe valley, due to be flooded when the sluice gates were finally closed to halt the flow of the mighty Zambezi River. Approximately 57 000 people were forced to move from their ancestral homes, abandoning family graves and spiritual sites to the depths of Kariba's water. They became a dispersed people who have never been able to reunite as a cohesive society, never again been able to live peacefully on the banks of the river which gave them life. Animals, too, perished in their thousands despite the gallant efforts of wildlife personnel who mounted a hastily planned rescue mission known as Operation Noah. Whispers from the depths gives a voice to the all but forgotten BaTonga. It celebrates their unique culture but deplores the price they paid for progress – a price from which they themselves derived no benefit whatsoever.

It is vital to ensure that your company complies with its contractual obligations. It is also vital to check whether the other parties are complying with theirs. This book was written to help those involved in the management of busy construction projects to find answers to contractual issues arising from the FIDIC forms of contract. The book is organised in such a way that you can find answers in a fraction of the time it would take to study the full conditions of contract. This book sets out the contractual obligations of the Employer, the Contractor, the Engineer and the DAB in a simple tabular form, together with the time-frames in which they should be performed and the consequences of non-compliance. This means that you will have all the information at your fingertips without having to study lengthy contractual clauses. For those using the FIDIC forms for the first time, or perhaps not using them too often, this book is a must, whilst experienced users will find it provides a valuable checklist. Whichever category you fall into, using this book should improve both knowledge and efficiency. The book is ideal for engineers, quantity surveyors, contract managers and any person whose job it is to understand the workings of a FIDIC contract. Roger Knowles had this to say: "The most important part of any contract is the obligations of the parties, the time frames in which the parties must perform these obligations, and the consequences of failing to meet them. Failure to carry out obligations correctly is a serious risk and common source of contention or claims. This practical ready-reference on the contractual obligations of the various parties for a FIDIC construction contract promotes efficient administration of construction projects, prevents contention and aids an easier understanding of their obligations." The FIDIC Contracts: Obligations of the Parties is presented in an easily-referenced, tabular format. The Red, Pink, Red Book Subcontract, Yellow, Silver, Gold, Pink, Green and White Books are all included and for ease of reference, each contract is separated into sections relating to the Employer, the Contractor, the Engineer (or the equivalent) and the DAB. This guide's accessible style will enable all parties and personnel involved in the project to quickly check that their company is performing the required obligations correctly - and also to ensure that other parties are doing the same.
This work deals comprehensively with the engineering aspects of hot and cold water reticulation and sanitary plumbing above ground and drains below ground in South Africa.
