Can concrete panels fly? Though at first it sounds improbable, the answer to this question is yes, they did fly through the world, supported by other structures, both physical and mental. They flew from the factory floor to the building site, from one country to another, and through the most diverse array of media: from paintings to posters, cartoons, photography, film, toys, and even in the design of opera stages. During the second half of the twentieth century, concrete panels were seen soaring across the skies. With essays by Michael Abrahamson, Jimena Castillo, Adrian Forty, Boris Groys, Maria Lind, Jennifer Mack, Philipp Meuser, Natalya Solopova, Erik Stenberg, and Christine Varga-Harris, the book tells the story of concrete panels at the center of debates in the modernizing and industrializing processes of architecture. When manual labor moved to automated mass-production, and new concrete element techniques rapidly spread producing billions of square meters of housing across the globe, the flying panel became the ultimate icon. This publication accompanies the exhibition "Flying Panels" curated by Pedro Ignacio Alonso and Hugo Palmarola, presented at ArkDes in Stockholm in October 2019.
With urban tunnel construction growing worldwide, the ability to accurately predict the ground and structural response to tunnelling and the associated risks is now more important than ever before. Engineers are expected to consider all aspects of tunnel engineering in order to safeguard existing infrastructure, by employing field monitoring, physical modelling and numerical analysis in developing a detailed knowledge of multiple soil-structure interactions. The Geotechnique Symposium in Print took place at the Institution of Civil Engineers on 14th September 2017 to discuss the wider aspects of tunnelling in urban locales. The papers included here bring together important international research presented at the symposium and featured in Geotechnique. Topics of discussion, amongst others, included: - case studies from Crossrail, CTRL and Barcelona metro projects - open-face tunnelling effects on non-displacement piles in clay - influence of building characteristics on tunnelling-induced ground movements - impact of new tunnel construction on structural performance of existing tunnels. Tunnelling in the Urban Environment offers practitioners and researchers alike with important coverage of the increasingly complex and varied challenges engineers have to face when constructing tunnels in urban centres.
The successful design and construction of iconic new buildings relies on a range of advanced technologies, in particular on advanced modelling techniques. In response to the increasingly complex buildings demanded by clients and architects, structural engineers have developed a range of sophisticated modelling software to carry out the necessary structural analysis and design work. Advanced Modelling Techniques in Structural Design introduces numerical analysis methods to both students and design practitioners. It illustrates the modelling techniques used to solve structural design problems, covering most of the issues that an engineer might face, including lateral stability design of tall buildings; earthquake; progressive collapse; fire, blast and vibration analysis; non-linear geometric analysis and buckling analysis . Resolution of these design problems are demonstrated using a range of prestigious projects around the world, including the Buji Khalifa; Willis Towers; Taipei 101; the Gherkin; Millennium Bridge; Millau viaduct and the Forth Bridge, illustrating the practical steps required to begin a modelling exercise and showing how to select appropriate software tools to address specific design problems.

Today, architecture in China is at a watershed. Over the last decade, rapid urbanisation and the burgeoning economy turned the country into a playground for the world's signature architects, making it possible to realise extravagant forms and structures at a vast scale. The Chinese government has now drawn a line under this phenomenon by issuing a directive calling an end to the 'oversized, xenocentric, weird' buildings devoid of character or cultural heritage that have sprung up across the country, requiring that urban architecture be 'suitable, economic, green and pleasing to the eye'. This government directive comes at a time when homegrown architecture has become increasingly self-assured and reflective in its approach. A new generation of architects in China in their 30s and 40s are emerging, and in a wholly contemporary way they are exploring local responses to often bewildering urban and rural conditions and serious social and environmental challenges. This is often expressed through a revival of interest in traditional street patterns, courtyards and gardens. At the same time, architects are also recognising the opportunities to harness the potential of China's established manufacturing base to develop prefabricated building systems. Innovative practices are employing new modes of working, such as research-based studio teaching and exhibitions, field workshops, cross-disciplinary collaboration, laboratory-based practice, design think-tanks and collective projects, generating a vibrant culture of design research. Guides readers through the entire process of liquid filtrations, from a basic understanding and lab scale testing to advanced process applications and up-scaling of processes Wet Cake Filtration is a key method in solid-liquid separation and plays an important role in many industrial processes from the separation of solid products from a liquid, to removing contaminants in wastewater treatment. Furthermore, separation processes are rarely isolated and the integration as well as necessary pre-treatments in the process chain must be carefully considered and implemented. Supported by more than 40 years of research, development, and teaching, this book provides a comprehensive treatment of all relevant aspects in wet cake filtration as a key method in solid-liquid-separation. The first part of Wet Cake Filtration: Fundamentals, Equipment, Strategies discusses general principles and applications of wet cake filtration, determination of proper feed streams, and filter cake formation. The next chapters deal with variations of pre-treatment and process conditions, including necessary aspects of lab scale tests, up-scaling, and filter design. This is further strengthened with chapters examining particle purification, yield maximization, and cake deliquoring. Lastly, the filter media is discussed as the central piece of wet cake filtration. Beside the different possibilities of available filter media structures and process relevant aspects of filter media selection, the reliable characterization of pore sizes by porometry and innovative additional functionalities are introduced. -Provides information on wet cake filtration?the necessary pre-treatments and process considerations?to guide the reader to develop or improve their own processes -Offers the necessary tools that allow the engineer to transform a lab scale test into a scaled-up process -Presents cake filtration process-related topics like slurry characterization or slurry pretreatment, and special developments such as hyperbaric filtration or steam pressure filtration -Discusses promising new processes like gasless cake desaturation and shrinkage crack free cake desaturation Wet Cake Filtration is a must-have resource for every engineer working with wet cake filtration, including water chemists, catalytic chemists, food chemists, chemical engineers, biotechnologists, and process engineers.

Structural engineers are often more interested in spectacular road
and rail bridges with enormous spans than in relatively narrow
footbridges built for modest loads. Local authorities, on the other
hand, see pedestrian and cycle bridges in inner-city or rural
locations as vital connections and important features of the town
or landscape. Designs are often selected on the basis of
architectural competitions. As there are no official guidelines for
the planning of footbridges, the building techniques and
performance of existing bridges are an important source of
information and inspiration for structural engineers, architects
and city or rural planners.
