The Healing Power of Writing - A Therapist's Guide to Using Journaling With Clients (Hardcover): Susan Borkin The Healing Power of Writing - A Therapist's Guide to Using Journaling With Clients (Hardcover)
Susan Borkin
R434 Discovery Miles 4 340 Shipped within 7 - 12 working days

While much has been written about the physical and emotional benefits of writing, little has been written specifically for mental health professionals detailing how to use therapeutic journaling with their clients. Therapeutic journaling any type of writing or related expressive process used for the purpose of psychological healing or growth can be an extremely helpful adjunctive therapy. When integrated into an overall treatment plan, regardless of the therapist s clinical orientation, journaling can become a dynamic tool for personal growth and healing. The first part of this book, Journaling and the Clinical Process, gives an overview of therapeutic journaling and the many potential benefits from its use. It provides concrete and specific steps for introducing journaling to psychotherapy clients and answers questions about structure and logistics. For example, engaging your client in writing a biographical statement will not only help focus the treatment plan but also provide a vast amount of background information. This section also introduces two very beneficial mnemonic devices to help clients focus and organize journaling between sessions. The next section, Presenting Problems and Journaling Solutions, addresses nine different diagnoses and explains specifically how therapeutic journaling can be integrated into the treatment plan of these diagnoses. Key diagnoses are covered: adjustment disorders, anxiety, depression, grief, low self-esteem, couple and relationship issues, addictions, disordered eating, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The final part of the book, Journaling Roadblocks and Building Blocks, addresses potentially difficult, sticky, or challenging situations regarding journaling, such as possible resistance to therapeutic journaling, privacy issues, safe boundaries, and protection of client material. Importantly, it also reviews those circumstances in which it is best not to use therapeutic journaling or when journaling is contraindicated. The author offers a program designed for therapists for creating their own therapeutic journaling practice. The Healing Power of Writing is filled with case studies, step-by-step exercises, and clear and practical guidelines for mental health professionals who want to incorporate journaling into their clients treatment.

Child and adolescent psychopharmacology is a rapidly growing field with psychotropic medications used widely in the treatment of this patient group. However, psychopharmacological treatment guidelines used for adults cannot simply be applied for children or adolescents, thus presenting clinicians and nurse practitioners with assessment and prescribing challenges. Based on the best-selling resource Stahl's Prescriber's Guide, this new book provides a user-friendly step-by-step manual on the range of psychotropic drugs prescribed for children and adolescents by clinicians and nurse practitioners. Reviewed by expert child and adolescent psychiatrists, the medications are presented in the same design format in order to facilitate rapid access to information. Each drug is broken down into a number of sections, each designated by a unique color background thereby clearly distinguishing information presented on therapeutics, safety and tolerability, dosing and use, what to expect, special populations, and the art of psychopharmacology, and followed by key references.

Cambridge Fundamentals of Neuroscience in Psychology - The Neuroscience of Suicidal Behavior (Paperback): Kees Van Heeringen Cambridge Fundamentals of Neuroscience in Psychology - The Neuroscience of Suicidal Behavior (Paperback)
Kees Van Heeringen
R557 Discovery Miles 5 570 Shipped within 7 - 12 working days

Nearly one million people take their own lives each year world-wide - however, contrary to popular belief, suicide can be prevented. While suicide is commonly thought to be an understandable reaction to severe stress, it is actually an abnormal reaction to regular situations. Something more than unbearable stress is needed to explain suicide, and neuroscience shows what this is, how it is caused and how it can be treated. Professor Kees van Heeringen describes findings from neuroscientific research on suicide, using various approaches from population genetics to brain imaging. Compelling evidence is reviewed that shows how and why genetic characteristics or early traumatic experiences may lead to a specific predisposition that makes people vulnerable to triggering life events. Neuroscientific studies are yielding results that provide insight into how the risk of suicide may develop; ultimately demonstrating how suicide can be prevented.

Psychiatric diagnosis is experiencing a crisis of confidence. Current approaches are outmoded with reform desperately needed. Clinical staging is a solution to this crisis. Clinical staging addresses the limitations of current diagnostic systems by recognising the full continuum or trajectory of mental illness from asymptomatic to chronic illness. It acknowledges the overlap between mental health symptoms during early stages and directly links each stage to treatment and underlying cognitive, neurological and biological changes. This approach enhances chances of early identification, promotes the implementation of safer treatments, and increases opportunities to alter the negative trajectory of mental disorders. This book comprehensively describes the conceptual basis of clinical staging in psychiatry, details current progress in identifying biomarkers for each stage, and explores the implications of staging on treatment and health systems. This book provides a foundation for transformational reform in psychiatric diagnosis.

An analysis of the cultural and economic drivers of the growing phenomenon of FGCS, written by cross-disciplinary experts, this book challenges the concept of individual consumer choice in FGCS: a decision that is rarely exercised in a socio-cultural vacuum. Four distinct aspects of FGCS are covered: variations in female genital anatomy; surgical techniques and evidence; historical contexts and ethical dilemmas; norm-critical understandings to inform professional responses. Rendering philosophical critiques accessible, and exposing dubious social values that underpin the practice, this text is crucial in driving a broader understanding of FGCS as a cultural phenomenon of our times. Only with a fuller understanding of the multiple perspectives of FGCS, can there be sensible alternatives for women and girls psychologically troubled by their natural, healthy form. Offering explanations and interventions at individual, institutional and societal levels, this text will be valued by both professional and non-professional audiences.

Autonomic Nervous System Table: Laminated Card (Cards): Babette Rothschild Autonomic Nervous System Table: Laminated Card (Cards)

The Body Remembers, Volume 2: Revolutionizing Trauma Treatment continues the discussion begun more than fifteen years ago with the publication of the best-selling and beloved The Body Remembers: The Psychophysiology of Trauma and Trauma Treatment. This new book is grounded in the belief that the most important goal for any trauma treatment is to improve the quality of life of the client. Therefore, the first prerequisite is that the client be reliably stable and feel safe in his or her daily life as well as the therapy situation. To accomplish this, Babette Rothschild empowers both therapists and clients by expanding trauma treatment options. For clients who prefer not to review memories, or are unable to do so safely, new and expanded strategies and principles for trauma recovery are presented. And for those who wish to avail themselves of more typical trauma memory work, tools to make trauma memory resolution even safer are included. Being able to monitor and modulate a trauma client's dysregulated nervous system is one of the practitioner's best lines of defence against traumatic hyperarousal going amok-risking such consequences as dissociation and decompensation. Rothschild clarifies and simplifies autonomic nervous system (ANS) understanding and observation with her creation of an original full colour table that distinguishes six levels of arousal. Included in this table (and the discussion that accompanies it) is a new and essential distinction between trauma-induced hypoarousal and the low arousal that is caused by lethargy or depression. Combining an authoritative yet personal voice, Rothschild gives clinicians the space to recognise where they may have made mistakes-by sharing her own!-as well as a road map towards more effective practice in the future. This book is absolutely essential reading for anyone working with those who have experienced trauma. The full colour ANS table is also available from W.W. Norton as a laminated desk reference and a wall poster suitable for framing so this valuable therapeutic tool will always be at hand.

Explores themes of power, privilege, and social justice in each chapter. Presents multiculturalism in terms of therapeutic responsiveness. When therapist-in-training, James O'Neill, starts his placement at a therapy centre in West London, his first referral is Abraham, a silent and frightened young man in a tightly zipped, hooded anorak. After spending the majority of their initial sessions in silence, O'Neill gradually gains Abraham's trust and learns of the abuse and violence he was subjected to as a child that caused him to hide away from the world - barely sleeping, too frightened to get undressed and shower, anything that might make him that vulnerable. Over the many years they meet, Abraham's unfolding story and bravery inspires O'Neill to confront his own complicated past. Abraham's courage to stand up to, and become intimate with, his fears teaches O'Neill to do the same. Undressing is at once a case-history, a novella, and something more than either: a remarkable story of two people drawn to each other for different reasons, discovering through trust how redemptive therapy can be.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (Paperback): John C. Markowitz Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (Paperback)
John C. Markowitz
R757 Discovery Miles 7 570 Shipped within 7 - 12 working days

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent, debilitating public health problem. Cognitive behavioral therapies (CBTs), and specifically exposure-based therapy, have long dominated PTSD treatment. Empirically supported treatments-Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and virtual reality therapy-all have relied upon the "fear extinction model" of exposing patients to reminders of their trauma until they grow accustomed to and extinguish the fear. While exposure-based treatments work, they (like all treatments) have their limits. Many patients refuse to undergo them or drop out of treatment prematurely; others may actually worsen in such treatment; and still others simply do not benefit from them. Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder describes a novel approach that has the potential to transform the psychological treatment of PTSD. Drawing on exciting new clinical research findings, this book provides a new, less threatening treatment option for the many patients and therapists who find exposure-based treatments grueling. Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) for PTSD was tested in a randomized controlled trial that compared three psychotherapies. Dr. Markowitz and his group found that IPT was essentially just as effective as exposure-based Prolonged Exposure. IPT had higher response rates and lower dropout rates than did PE, particularly for patients who were also suffering from major depression. These novel findings suggest that patients need not undergo exposure to recover from PTSD. Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder describes an exciting alternative therapy for PTSD, details the results of the study, and provides an IPT treatment manual for PTSD.
