A ground-breaking argument for better treatment of mental health from Richard Layard (author of Happiness) and David M. Clark. Britain has become a world leader in providing psychological therapies thanks to the work of Richard Layard and David Clark. But, even so, in Britain and worldwide the majority of people who need help still don't get treatment. This is both unjust and a false economy. This book argues for change. It shows that mental ill-health causes more of the suffering in our society than physical illness, poverty or unemployment. Moreover, greater spending on helping people to recover from mental health problems - and stay well - would generate massive savings to national economies, as those who suffer from depression and anxiety disorders account for nearly a half of all disability and are predominantly of working age. Modern talking therapies, such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), are highly effective, and if more sufferers got these treatments, lives would be turned around and the cost would be fully covered by the huge savings. Thrive explores the new effective solutions to the misery and injustice caused by mental illness. It describes how successful psychological treatments have been developed and explains what works best for whom. It also urges us to do all we can to prevent these problems in the first place, through better schools and a better society. And, most importantly, it offers real hope. 'This book is an inspiring success story and a stirring call to further action. Its message is as compelling as it is important: the social costs of mental illness are terribly high and the costs of effective treatments are surprisingly low' Daniel Kahneman 'Extremely easy and pleasurable to read. It's the most comprehensive, humane and generous study of mental illness that I've come across' Melvyn Bragg 'Remarkable . . . presents the issues in a style that easy for the professional, the general public, and policy makers to understand' Aaron T Beck 'Professors Layard and Clark (the Dream Team of British Social Science) make a compelling case for a massive injection of resources into the treatment and prevention of mental illness. This is simply the best book on public policy and mental health ever written' Martin Seligman RICHARD LAYARD is one of the world's leading labour economists, and in 2008 received the IZA International Prize for Labour Economics. A member of the House of Lords, he has done much to raise the public profile of mental health. His 2005 book Happiness has been translated into 20 languages. DAVID M. CLARK, Professor of Psychology at Oxford, is one of the world's leading experts on CBT, responsible for much progress in treatment methods. With Richard Layard, he was the main driver behind the UK's Improving Access to Psychological Therapies programme.

The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook for PTSD - Practical Exercises for Overcoming Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress... The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook for PTSD - Practical Exercises for Overcoming Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (Paperback)

This pragmatic workbook offers evidence-based skills grounded in dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) to help you find lasting relief from trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). If you've experienced trauma, you should know that there is nothing wrong with you. Trauma is a normal reaction to an abnormal event. Sometimes, the symptoms of trauma persist long after the traumatic situation has ceased. This is what we call PTSD-in other words, the "trauma after the trauma." This happens when the aftereffects of trauma-such as anxiety, depression, anger, fear, insomnia and even addiction - end up causing more ongoing harm than the trauma itself. So, how can you start healing? With this powerful and proven-effective workbook, you'll find practical exercises for overcoming trauma using mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance. You'll learn how to be present in the moment and identity the things that trigger your trauma. You'll also find activities and exercises to help you cope with stress, manage intense emotions, navigate conflict with others and change unhealthy thought patterns that keep you stuck. Finally, you'll find practical materials for review and closure, so you can take what you've learned out into the world with you. If you're ready to move past your trauma and start living your life again, this workbook will help guide you, one step at a time. The practical interventions in this guide can be used on their own or in conjunction with therapy.

Cambridge Fundamentals of Neuroscience in Psychology - The Neuroscience of Suicidal Behavior (Paperback): Kees Van Heeringen Cambridge Fundamentals of Neuroscience in Psychology - The Neuroscience of Suicidal Behavior (Paperback)
Kees Van Heeringen
R557 Discovery Miles 5 570 Shipped within 7 - 12 working days

Nearly one million people take their own lives each year world-wide - however, contrary to popular belief, suicide can be prevented. While suicide is commonly thought to be an understandable reaction to severe stress, it is actually an abnormal reaction to regular situations. Something more than unbearable stress is needed to explain suicide, and neuroscience shows what this is, how it is caused and how it can be treated. Professor Kees van Heeringen describes findings from neuroscientific research on suicide, using various approaches from population genetics to brain imaging. Compelling evidence is reviewed that shows how and why genetic characteristics or early traumatic experiences may lead to a specific predisposition that makes people vulnerable to triggering life events. Neuroscientific studies are yielding results that provide insight into how the risk of suicide may develop; ultimately demonstrating how suicide can be prevented.

Overcoming Insomnia - A Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Approach, Therapist Guide (Paperback): Jack Edinger, Colleen Carney Overcoming Insomnia - A Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Approach, Therapist Guide (Paperback)
Jack Edinger, Colleen Carney
R947 Discovery Miles 9 470 Shipped within 7 - 11 working days

It is estimated that one in ten U.S. adults suffers from chronic insomnia. If left untreated, chronic insomnia reduces quality of life and increases risk for psychiatric and medical disease, especially depression and anxiety. There are two forms of insomnia: secondary insomnia, in which it is comorbid with another condition such as psychiatric disorders, chronic pain conditions, or cardiopulmonary disorders, and primary insomnia, which does not coexist with any other disorder, Though insomnia may be caused by any number of things, it is primarily sustained by the development of poor sleep habits (such as varying sleep-wake schedule, daytime napping, and spending excessive time in bed) as an attempt to manage the problem. This treatment program uses cognitive-behavioral therapy methods to correct those poor sleep habits. CBT has been proven in multiple studies to improve sleep hygiene by reducing time spent in bed before sleep onset, reducing time spent awake after first sleep onset, and increasing the quality and efficiency of sleep. Developed by the authors, this evidence based treatment can be used for both primary and secondary insomnia sufferers. Patients are first given information about healthy sleep and the reasons for improving sleep habits, then a behavioral program is developed to address that patient's specific sleep problems. Use of sleep logs, assessment forms, and other homework (all provided in the corresponding workbook) allows client and therapist to work together to develop an effective sleep regimen tailored specifically for each client. Finally, several sessions are dedicated to increasing compliance and problem-solving.

R226 Discovery Miles 2 260 Shipped within 7 - 12 working days

Whether having a glass or two of wine with a meal or drinking socially with friends and work colleagues, alcohol has a significant and enjoyable part in many people's lives. Yet alcohol consumption, even in relatively moderate amounts, can also have an adverse impact on health, personal relationships, sleep, work, family life, and more. In this book, clinical psychologist Stuart Linke encourages us to carefully reflect on our own drinking habits. Are we drinking more than we realized? Why do we drink? How can we take steps to control or perhaps stop drinking if we choose to? Using questionnaires, worksheets and accessible examples of real situations, Thinking About Drinking provides clear, practical strategies for improving our relationship to alcohol. Linke shares his expertise and experience in cognitive behavioural therapy and motivational therapy [or simply "in psychology"] to help both heavy and moderate drinkers: Calculate alcohol intake Think about drinking habits and patterns Identify the risks posed by alcohol Understand the process of change Draw up a realistic plan of action Successfully implement the plan Skillfully handle relapses. For people who would like to better control and alter their drinking but are not sure how to go about it, Thinking About Drinking is a simple and sensitive guidebook from an expert in the field, providing step by step instruction and advice to help promote a healthier and more balanced relationship to alcohol.

Kim Noble is an accomplished artist whose work has been exhibited around the world. She is a mother with a 13-year-old daughter. She is a bubbly and vivacious woman. To meet her you wouldn't think anything was wrong. But when Kim was younger than five years old, her personality splintered and fractured. In 1995 she was finally diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) which has been described as a creative way to cope with unbearable pain. Now her body plays host to more than 20 different personalities, or 'alters'. There are women and men, adults and children; there is a scared little boy who speaks only Latin, an elective mute, a gay man and an anorexic teenager. Some alters age with her body; others are stuck in time. ALL OF ME takes the reader through the extraordinary world of a woman for whom the very nature of reality is different. It will tell of her terrifying battles to understand her own mind; of her desperate struggle against all odds to win back the child she loved; and of her courage and commitment in trying to make sense of her life. It is by turns shocking, inspiring, sometimes funny, and deeply moving.

When therapist-in-training, James O'Neill, starts his placement at a therapy centre in West London, his first referral is Abraham, a silent and frightened young man in a tightly zipped, hooded anorak. After spending the majority of their initial sessions in silence, O'Neill gradually gains Abraham's trust and learns of the abuse and violence he was subjected to as a child that caused him to hide away from the world - barely sleeping, too frightened to get undressed and shower, anything that might make him that vulnerable. Over the many years they meet, Abraham's unfolding story and bravery inspires O'Neill to confront his own complicated past. Abraham's courage to stand up to, and become intimate with, his fears teaches O'Neill to do the same. Undressing is at once a case-history, a novella, and something more than either: a remarkable story of two people drawn to each other for different reasons, discovering through trust how redemptive therapy can be.
