World-renowned neuroscientist, Wendy Suzuki, explains how to harness the power of anxiety to your advantage - to think better, feel better and DO better. We are living in the age of anxiety, a situation that often makes us feel as if we are locked into an endless cycle of stress, sleeplessness, and worry. But what if we had a way to leverage our anxiety to help us solve problems and fortify our wellbeing? What if, instead of seeing anxiety as a curse, we could recognize it for the unique gift that it is? Dr Wendy Suzuki has discovered a paradigm-shifting truth about anxiety: yes, it is uncomfortable, but it is also essential for our survival. In fact, anxiety is a key component of our ability to live optimally. Every emotion we experience has an evolutionary purpose, and anxiety is designed to draw our attention to vulnerability. If we simply approach it as something to avoid, get rid of, or dampen, we actually miss an opportunity to improve our lives. Listening to our anxieties from a place of curiosity, and without fear, can actually guide us onto a path that leads to joy. Drawing on her own experiences and based on the latest cutting-edge research, Dr Suzuki has developed an inspiring guide that shows us how to turn anxiety on its head! "Anxiety isn't a weakness-it's your brain telling you that it's time for a change. And in this incredibly insightful book, Dr. Wendy Suzuki breaks down the exact whats, whys, and hows to flipping your perspective, and turning anxiety into the secret weapon you can use to get the life you want. She will transform your kryptonite into your super power!" -- Lisa Bilyeu, co-founder of Impact Theory

Cognitive Dimensions of Major Depressive Disorder (Paperback): Bernhard T. Baune Cognitive Dimensions of Major Depressive Disorder (Paperback)
Bernhard T. Baune
R585 Discovery Miles 5 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a clinically and neurobiologically highly heterogenous mood disorder that consists of a variety of symptom clusters including mood symptoms, physical symptoms, and cognitive symptoms. While the traditional model of depression implicates mood as the primary symptom cluster, a more recently published conceptual understanding of depression has extended to also include cognitive symptoms. Moreover, the understanding of the central role of cognitive processes in emotion processing, social interaction, and pure cognitive performance has led to a model suggestion that places cognitive processing central to the pathophysiology of depression. Cognitive dimensions of depression have long been implicated in the nature of depression that are characterised typically by impaired cognitive and emotional processes. In the following volume the dimensions of cognitive function, emotion processing, and social cognitive processing are highlighted to comprehensively describe large parts of the clinical symptoms as well as the pathophysiology and biology of the brain-based disorder of depression. The focus on the above cognitive and emotional dimensions of depression offers extended and novel diagnostic and treatment approaches ranging from pharmacological to psychological interventions targeting those dimensions of depression. This volume informs about some of the more fundamental psychological, biological and clinical concepts that are applicable to the comprehensive treatment of depression and is suitable for students, trainees, clinicians and scientists in the fields of psychology, neuropsychology, psychiatry, cognitive neuroscience, neurology, general medicine / general practice and other health care professionals as it will also cover core knowledge and skills for training as well as practice.

Mastering Self-Control (Paperback): Joshua John Clarkson Mastering Self-Control (Paperback)
Joshua John Clarkson
R693 Discovery Miles 6 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Grounded in nearly a century of scientific research, Mastering Self Control is an academic 'how to' in the mastery of self control. Though most of us have an acute awareness of the goals we want to achieve, we have little insight into how we respond to questions central to successful goal attainment. What is a realistic goal? Can we turn intentions to actions? Why do we need a support system? It is within this context that this volume identifies a series of actionable strategies to push readers to master self-control and consequently optimize goal progress.

The End of Trauma - How the New Science of Resilience Is Changing How We Think About PTSD (Hardcover): George Bonanno The End of Trauma - How the New Science of Resilience Is Changing How We Think About PTSD (Hardcover)
George Bonanno
R622 R520 Discovery Miles 5 200 Save R102 (16%) Ships in 7 - 11 working days

After 9/11, thousands of mental health professionals from across the country assembled in Manhattan to help handle the almost certain avalanche of traumatized New Yorkers. Curiously, it never came. While plenty of people did seek mental health counseling after 9/11, the numbers were nowhere near expected. As renowned psychologist George Bonanno argues, psychiatrists failed to predict the response to 9/11 because our model of trauma is wrong. Psychiatrists only study clinically traumatized people, and over time this skewed sample has led us to believe that trauma was the natural response to stress. But what about all the people who never come in for help? Bonanno has spent his career studying how people respond to potentially traumatic events, whether or not they show symptoms of PTSD. In TK, he lays out a bold new model of the origins and trauma, and how we can more effectively treat it. Bonanno's research has shown that the natural response to stressful situations is not trauma but resilience. Most people are, by default, able to cope without suffering long-term consequences. This is important because assuming that people are traumatized when they aren't can actually risk traumatizing them. TK explains what makes us resilient, why people sometimes aren't, and what really helps us work through trauma. of the book draws on Bonanno's pioneering studies on trauma in war veterans, car crash victims, assault and abuse survivors, and even the victims of 9/11. His most crucial finding is that resilience does not come from one essential coping strategy, as other books argue. Resilience is actually a process in which we actively explore, assess, and adapt the strategies that allow us to engage with a situation. Trauma happens when our natural systems of resilience falter, and Bonanno develops a method for restoring resilience called the flexibility sequence, a series of strategies designed to help us find new coping strategies when we find ourselves at a loss. Bonanno's first book, The Other Side of Sadness, showed that the oft-touted notion that there are "five stages" of bereavement ignored how real people grieve. The book spoke not only to his fellow psychologists, but to thousands of people who needed to better understand their own experiences of loss. In the same tradition, TK reclaims the study of trauma from outdated theorizing and puts it in the context of people's real experiences, because we can only understand how to heal from trauma once we understand how humans actually deal with it.

We hear the terms trauma and PTSD more and more. Yet many people still believe that trauma can only result from experiences that are particularly extreme. But trauma is an emotional response that can stem from a wide variety of upsetting experiences, leaving us feeling anxious, weighed down by negative emotions or memories, or feeling like we lack security. As a licensed therapist, Kati Morton addresses this challenge: If we don't have an understanding of trauma and how it's defined, how can we work to overcome it? The urgency of meeting this challenge increases at a time when we are bombarded with a constant flow of frightening stories-about global pandemics, ecological disasters, riots, and mass shootings-that can trigger our emotional stress. We must find a balance between staying connected to the world on social media while avoiding the false facts, hate-filled comments, and passive-aggressive posts and accounts that feed negative thoughts. In Traumatized, Morton shares a unique perspective on trauma in the modern age, including:Tips to be more mindful of what we do and who we follow online, which is the key to improving our relationship with social media and stop spreading the traumaHelpful therapeutic techniques to heal from childhood traumaSkills to identify transgenerational trauma and begin to break harmful cycles in your homeWhether to seek therapy or counseling.Ultimately, you'll learn how to identify and cope with your triggers, pay attention to how platforms and accounts can harm your mental health, and find the tools to manage what you can see online.

'A tour de force . . . an important, affecting and effective book' ALASTAIR CAMPBELL '[A] gorgeous and urgent book' STEVEN PINKER 'MENDING THE MIND reminds us that, despite our hazy understanding of depression, and despite the true horror of the illness, some hope for recovery remains' THE TIMES Sadness is an inevitable part of life, but for most people it will usually alternate or coexist with happy times. Clinical depression, on the other hand, is a mental disorder that causes torment and anguish. It has no moments of relief. It unhinges us from everything we thought we knew about the world and makes us strangers to those we love. It is the predominant mental-health problem worldwide, affecting more than 250 million people. More than a fifth of the population of the UK report symptoms of depression or anxiety. Yet how much do we really know of the condition and of ways to treat it? In MENDING THE MIND, Oliver Kamm recounts what it's like to be mentally ill with severe depression, and he details the route by which, with professional help, he was able to make a full recovery. His experience prompted him to find out all he could about a condition that has afflicted humanity throughout recorded history. He explains the progress of science in understanding depression, and the insights into the condition that have been provided by writers and artists through the ages. His message is hopeful: though depression is a real and devastating illness, the mind and its disorders are yielding to scientific inquiry, and effective psychological, psychiatric and pharmacological treatments are already available. Candid, revelatory and deeply versed in current scientific research, MENDING THE MIND sets out in plain language how the scourge of clinical depression can be countered and may eventually be overcome.

The book begins by summarizing attachment theory and science - the theoretical basis of this model - together with the experiential approach to change in psychotherapy. Chapters describe the three stages of EFIT, macro-interventions, such as the EFIT Tango, and various micro-interventions through clinical exercises, case studies, and transcripts to demonstrate this model in practice with individuals, highlighting the unique benefits of EFT as a cross-modality approach for treating emotional disorders. With exercises interwoven throughout the text, this book is built to accompany in-person and online training, helping the practicing clinician offer targeted and empirically tested interventions that not only alleviate symptoms of distress but expand the client's emotional balance, agency, and sense of self. As the next major extension of the EFT approach, this book will appeal to therapists already working with couples and families as well as those just beginning their professional journey. Psychotherapists, psychologists, counselors, social workers, and mental health workers will also find this book invaluable.

Sue Wright
R892 Discovery Miles 8 920 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

Why is hope so fundamental to our existence? Hope is increasingly being acknowledged as an important factor both for people's resilience and for positive therapeutic outcomes. In considering this and many other questions, this evocative textbook introduces the reader to the repeated shifting, or 'dance', between hope and despair that is so often encountered by practitioners working with profoundly traumatised individuals. This book brings a sharp focus to the ways in which therapeutic relationships can draw individuals out of the constant oscillation between light and dark. It provides an insightful and thoughtful discussion not just about despair itself, but about how to be with despair. Informed by the author's own years of experience in the field of psychotherapy, this engaging and stimulating book provides practical guidance on how students, trainees and practitioners can inspire fresh hope in deeply troubled clients.

Jack Chalkley
R915 Discovery Miles 9 150 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

The Content of Psychological Distress makes the case for focusing psychological attention on the content of people's distressing experience. The growing demand for counselling and therapy in difficult financial times has created pressure to keep work short and highly structured. This has increased reliance on set procedures and categories at the expense of the personal and specific. The book looks at the rationale for, and practical steps involved in, taking individuals' accounts of their concerns as a starting point. It treats these as a foundation on which approaches of various kinds can be laid. It considers the impact of doing so on building relationships and improving the accuracy and richness of the work undertaken. The book is illustrated with examples from general mental health and particular psychological therapies, as well as with applications to pain, intensive care, cancer, paediatrics and forensic learning difficulties. This is a timely and important book for students, trainees and practitioners that contains reflections on the historical and philosophical background to the subject. It relates what is argued to a range of existing ideas and approaches concerned with making psychological work ethical and patient-centred.

R4,254 Discovery Miles 42 540 Ships in 10 - 20 working days

Psychotherapy is an indispensable approach in the treatment of mental disorders and, for some mental disorders, it is the most effective treatment. Yet, psychotherapy is abound with ethical issues. In psychotherapy ethics, numerous fundamental ethical issues converge, including self-determination/autonomy, decision-making capacity and freedom of choice, coercion and constraint, medical paternalism, the fine line between healthiness and illness, insight into illness and need of therapy, dignity, under- and overtreatment, and much more. The Oxford Handbook of Psychotherapy Ethics explores a whole range of ethical issues in the heterogenous field of psychotherapy thereby closing a widespread perceived gap between ethical sensitivity, technical language, and knowledge among psychotherapists. The book is intended not only for a clinical audience, but also for a philosophical/ethical audience - linking the two disciplines by fostering a productive dialogue between them, thereby enriching both the psychotherapeutic encounter and the ethical analysis and sensitivity in and outside the clinic. An essential book for psychotherapists in clinical practice, it will also be valuable for those professionals providing mental health services beyond psychology and medicine, including counsellors, social workers, nurses, and ministers.
