The Content of Psychological Distress - Addressing Complex Personal Experience (Paperback): Jack Chalkley The Content of Psychological Distress - Addressing Complex Personal Experience (Paperback)
Jack Chalkley
R870 Discovery Miles 8 700 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

The Content of Psychological Distress makes the case for focusing psychological attention on the content of people's distressing experience. The growing demand for counselling and therapy in difficult financial times has created pressure to keep work short and highly structured. This has increased reliance on set procedures and categories at the expense of the personal and specific. The book looks at the rationale for, and practical steps involved in, taking individuals' accounts of their concerns as a starting point. It treats these as a foundation on which approaches of various kinds can be laid. It considers the impact of doing so on building relationships and improving the accuracy and richness of the work undertaken. The book is illustrated with examples from general mental health and particular psychological therapies, as well as with applications to pain, intensive care, cancer, paediatrics and forensic learning difficulties. This is a timely and important book for students, trainees and practitioners that contains reflections on the historical and philosophical background to the subject. It relates what is argued to a range of existing ideas and approaches concerned with making psychological work ethical and patient-centred.

Windy Dryden
R791 Discovery Miles 7 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) is an approach to counselling and psychotherapy in which great emphasis is placed on how attitudes are at the root of emotional problems and their solution. Each skill is explained in detail, and examples are given of how each skill can be put into practice. These skills include: developing a problem list and setting goals choosing a target problem and assessing a specific example examining attitudes dealing with your doubts, reservations and objections taking action. By using these skills in an active way, it can be possible to address effectively emotional problems such as anxiety, depression, shame, guilt, hurt, unhealthy anger, unhealthy jealousy and unhealthy envy. This book can be used by people on their own, and by those who are consulting an REBT therapist. It will also be of interest to therapists and counsellors.

The Psychology of the Selfie - What the Research Says (Paperback): Barrie Gunter The Psychology of the Selfie - What the Research Says (Paperback)
Barrie Gunter
R670 Discovery Miles 6 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Psychology of the Selfie provides a comprehensive overview and analysis of research on the significance of selfies, offering insights into the topic from a psychological perspective and examining important issues such as body image, self-objectification, mental health and psychological benefits. Selfies are a worldwide phenomenon. Although dismissed by critics as a sign of self-absorbed narcissism, they are also a social currency that maintains and reinforces friendships, a feedback loop for self-identity affirmation, a promotional tool for gaining social influence, and a method for preserving memories of life events. In this book, Barrie Gunter expertly explores the psychological underpinnings of the contemporary global phenomenon of "selfies", from the historical roots and meteoric rise due to technical advancements, to the different personality types of selfie-takers, to social relationships, to group and personal identity. Looking at both the psychological nature and impact of selfies, this book reviews different psychological outcomes for selfie-takers, both positive and negative, and the growth in psychological and physical problems that can sometimes arise. Presenting a comprehensive analysis specifically of selfie behaviour, this book is an essential reference for students and researchers in communications and media, journalism, information studies, psychology and sociology, as well as anyone with a general interest in the phenomenon.

Meeting Mental Breakdown Mindfully - How to Help the Comprehend, Cope and Connect Way (Paperback): Isabel Clarke Meeting Mental Breakdown Mindfully - How to Help the Comprehend, Cope and Connect Way (Paperback)
Isabel Clarke
R677 Discovery Miles 6 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Meeting Mental Breakdown Mindfully introduces the Comprehend, Cope and Connect (CCC) approach, developed and evaluated within mental health services, to a wider audience who need to understand mental health issues, whether for themselves or to support others. The book deconstructs and normalizes mental breakdown, starting from the individual's inner experience, leading to practical ways of helping people out of distress and impaired functioning, towards the realization of their whole potential. It is based on an understanding of connections in the brain founded in cognitive science, which explains how human functioning can easily go astray. CCC provides a compelling rationale for putting mindfulness at the heart of the solution, along with other ways of coping with emotions and changing behaviour. The approach is brought to life through three illustrative case histories, giving a representative and realistic insight into both the experience of the individual and the workings of the system. Meeting Mental Breakdown Mindfully will help mental health professionals and those in related fields identify more accurately what people in their organization or under their care are going through.

From Irvin's work in psychotherapy examining our fear of death, compounded with personal experience, A MATTER OF DEATH AND LIFE seeks to answer questions that we all hold about the end of our lives: How much are we willing to bear to stay alive? How can we end our days as painlessly as possible? How can we gracefully leave this world to the next generation? Told at first in alternating chapters between them, completed in the aftermath of Marilyn's death, A MATTER OF DEATH AND LIFE is an unforgettable portrait of love and unflinchingly examines what it means to live and die well.

'Wise, beautiful, heartbreaking, raw' The Times 'A beacon of hope to all of us who will be bereaved' Kathryn Mannix 'An unforgettable and achingly beautiful story of enduring love' Lori Gottleib Internationally renowned psychiatrist and author Irvin Yalom has devoted his career to counselling those suffering from anxiety and grief. But never had he faced the need to counsel himself until his wife, esteemed feminist author Marilyn Yalom, was diagnosed with cancer. In A MATTER OF DEATH AND LIFE, Marilyn and Irvin share how they took on profound new struggles: Marilyn to die a good death, Irvin to live on without her. In alternating accounts of their last months together and Irvin's first months alone, they offer us a rare window into coping with death and the loss of one's beloved. The Yaloms had rare blessings - a loving family, a beautiful home, a large circle of friends, avid readers around the world, and a long, fulfilling marriage - but they faced death as we all do. With the candour and wisdom of those who have thought deeply and loved well, they investigate universal questions of intimacy, love, and grief. Informed by two lifetimes of experience, A MATTER OF DEATH AND LIFE offers poignant insights and solace to all those seeking to fight despair in the face of death, so that they can live meaningfully.

It will help you change the way you think and feel about yourself, about others and about the world around. Fathom - An Uncovering Of Trauma (Paperback): Lisa Dart Fathom - An Uncovering Of Trauma (Paperback)
Lisa Dart
R394 Discovery Miles 3 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Fathom, an experimental memoir, explores the hinterland of the narrator's mind. The narrative of Fathom focuses on a tantalising fragment from the past. `I think I saw a lot of blood' and other odd surfacings from memory are explored through the work of psychoanalysis. Much like a kind of detective work to begin with, the narrative unravels the depths that appear in psychotic breakdown. Identity is evoked through three personas of the self: the puppet, the puppet-master and She-who-knows. Poetic in style, though something of a detective story, the first-person narrative is richly layered - Plath, Shakespeare, Sophocles and pop songs all have their place. Highly concentrated, structured in three parts, non-linear in chronology and highly metaphoric, Fathom appeals to those with a deep interest in mental health and all types of therapy.

The Neuroscience of Addiction (Paperback): Francesca Mapua Filbey The Neuroscience of Addiction (Paperback)
Francesca Mapua Filbey
R685 Discovery Miles 6 850 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

This book addresses a growing need for accessible information on the neuroscience of addiction. In the past decade, neuroscientific research has greatly advanced our understanding of the brain mechanisms of addiction. However this information still remains largely confined to scientific outlets. As legislation continues to evolve and the stigma surrounding addiction persists, new findings on the impact of substances on the brain are an important public health issue. Francesca Mapua Filbey gives readers an overview of research on addiction including classic theories as well as current neuroscientific studies. A variety of textual supports - including a glossary, learning objectives and review questions - help students better reinforce their reading and make the text a ready-made complement to undergraduate and graduate courses on addiction.

Schooling the Violent Imagination (Paperback): John F. Schostak Schooling the Violent Imagination (Paperback)
John F. Schostak
R745 Discovery Miles 7 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The violent imagination begins in experiences of violation against the self and grows through the stories, myths, folktales and anecdotes of everyday life. Originally published in 1986, John Schostak discusses the educational, social and moral implications of the violent imagination in connection with theories of violence, childrearing practices, and schooling as a childrearing institution. He also looks at the relation between sexism, racism, drugs and the emergence of a vandalised sense of self. The book explores the complex ways in which images of violence pervade society, inform action and provide interpretations of events. Schools, the author argues, contribute towards the development of a violent imagination which guides judgements and actions. The child's images and experiences of violation may involve physical assault or psychological forms of assault. Some of these experiences of violation and violence are considered normal, even moral ('spare the rod and spoil the child'); others are considered abnormal, criminal, pathological - although the abstract logical form of each may be equivalent. Nevertheless, all such images contribute towards the development of a sense of violation, and children are schooled to accept normal forms and reject abnormal forms.

The Child Survivor - Healing Developmental Trauma and Dissociation (Paperback, 2nd New edition): Joyanna L. Silberg The Child Survivor - Healing Developmental Trauma and Dissociation (Paperback, 2nd New edition)
Joyanna L. Silberg
R803 Discovery Miles 8 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this second edition of Joyanna Silberg's classic The Child Survivor, practitioners who treat dissociative children will find practical tools that are backed up by recent advances in clinical research. Chapters are filled with examples of clinical dilemmas that can challenge even the most expert child trauma clinicians, and Silberg shows how to handle these dilemmas with creativity, attunement, and sensitivity to the adaptive nature of even the most complex dissociative symptoms. The new edition addresses the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on children and provides tips for working with traumatized children in telehealth. A new chapter on organized abuse explains how children victimized by even the most sadistic crimes can respond well to therapy. Clinicians on the front lines of treatment will come away from the book with an arsenal of therapeutic techniques that they can put into practice right away, limiting the need for restrictive hospitalizations or out-of-home placements for their young clients.

Psychotherapy with Survivors of Sexual Violence - Inside and Outside the Room (Paperback): Erene Hadjiioannou Psychotherapy with Survivors of Sexual Violence - Inside and Outside the Room (Paperback)
Erene Hadjiioannou
R789 Discovery Miles 7 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The role of psychotherapists in creating change for survivors of sexual violence can extend far wider than the rooms in which appointments are provided. Psychotherapy with Survivors of Sexual Violence aims to provide psychotherapists with practical guidance that will enable them to work with the prolific societal issue of sexual violence, both in the privacy of clinical practice and the wider world as activists. Erene Hadjiioannou outlines the components of relational psychotherapy necessary to counter the trauma that brings survivors to services, with a particular focus on empowerment and the freedoms that constitute it. The book defines the neurophysiological systems involved in surviving traumatic experiences and common psychological presentations, including post-traumatic stress disorder. Hadjiioannou explains the long-standing challenges of delivering psychotherapy to survivors who have reported to the police from various perspectives: understanding the criminal justice system, note-keeping, and survivors' experiences of reporting. Barriers to accessing support, including myths, are examined and the book includes interview quotes from a range of survivors as well as fictional case studies throughout. Psychotherapy with Survivors of Sexual Violence will be a key text for psychotherapists of all backgrounds working with survivors, and for mental health professionals in training.
